About this deal

It's All About Me: Hanselmann explicitly describes Mogg as being "cold," "creepy," and having "boundary issues" with Megg. I've made so many friends, and with people who I genuinely respect and find utterly inspiring and brilliant. It's wonderful. It feels like home. I outgrew the Australian scene years ago and was frustrated by its fishbowl nature. It's nice to be out in the ocean. I want to make it better here though, smash the fishbowl. Tumblr is the key right now, but people have to work. Only people who bleed passion and have something to say will make it. If you make work of a certain level of quality and volume people will not be able to ignore you. The Cameo: Anthropomorphic opossum Clementine from the webcomic Terrible Terrible Terrible makes a blink and you'll miss it ◊ appearance in "Health Club".

Hate Sink: Mogg has little in the way of endearing qualities. Megg and Owl have moments where the audience can sympathize with them, and even with Werewolf Jones there's a patheticness to his rage and dysfunction that almost evokes pity. Mogg is a whiny, petulant deadbeat who contributes nothing of value to the group's living arrangement other than the hefty allowance he gets from his family. That sole positive disappears in Bad Gateway when his parents decide to withhold it. Megg becomes much more keenly aware of how useless he is after Owl moves out and her relationship falls apart without his stabilizing influence. Equal-Opportunity Evil: For all of his vile behavior, Werewolf Jones is at least accepting of Booger's transgender identity. It's worth noting partly because Jones knew Booger since well before her transition, implying he has no reservations about befriending LGBT folks (and it'd be hypocritical if he did, given his own bisexuality). Of course, that could also just be a result of his desire for any attention and companionship he can come by. As Hanselmann says in his afterword, "The End. Super classy. This book is surely going to be super appealing to newcomers and library personnel. Honestly, this book was intended to be a horrible test of the audience's patience. Whittling the fan base down. Proper comics to come."Ultimately, Crisis Zone is a sensitive, sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing account of last year: a story about what it's like to have terrible friends during a pandemic, and a reflection on how economic and political hopelessness collided to make that situation even worse." In high school, Owl was the target and nerd stereotype, socially awkward, very introverted, regularly excluded and humiliated by everyone. In 1996, he met Werewolf Jones, who stole his bike and beat him up, for short. Booger and Mike, who were with WW, invited Owl to have lunch with them, that's when he also met Megg and Mogg. Owl fell in love at first sight with Megg even though she was she was dating Jones at the time. [1] When he was around 16, Owl used to hang out with the gang before his workshift in the afternoon. He worked at a games workshop called GameSpace that is said to smell really bad. [10] The son of a biker and a drug addict, Hanselmann was born in Launceston, Tasmania, and grew up in Hobart. In a 2013 interview with the Comics Journal, he compared his childhood to the Harmony Korine film Gummo (a vision of “teenage anomie, complete with drugs, garbage and dead cats”, in the words of the New York Times). In that same interview, he came out publicly as a “cross-dresser/transvestite, whatever you want to call it”. His treatment of gender roles, and how his cross-dressing affects this, is a popular topic in interviews, one he sometimes side-steps. “I have no idea [how it affects my writing]. That’s for the critics to tell me,” he recently told Format Magazine. He is fiercely aware of gender; when talking about a potential TV adaption of Megg, Mogg and Owl, he says that the one thing he demands of networks is “half the team has to be female. I don’t want to make a show for boys … I think one of the main strengths of Megg, Mogg and Owl is that it’s reasonably gender-neutral – although, Megg really needs to find some female friends.” Hanselmann's Tumblr, Girl Mountain, is a textbook example of that platform's reach, provided you've got something other people want to look at. Turns out tons of people in the alternative-comics world worldwide want to look at a strange stoner dramedy drawn by a Ben Jones-influenced Australian. Hanselmann's comics-as-criticism series Truth Zone , which appears on Frank Santoro's Comics Workbook Tumblr, stars Megg, Mogg, Owl, and Werewolf Jones as well, and positions them (and by extension Hanselmann) as the no-bullshit friends with the same interests in obscure alt/art/underground comics as you – quite a feat, given his location a world away from most of the figures covered in the comics. urn:oclc:record:1359010363 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier meggmogginamster0000hans Identifier-ark ark:/13960/s2v64p3zsxc Invoice 1652 Isbn 160699879X

Ungrateful Bastard: Mogg has zero gratitude towards Megg and Owl even after they've tolerated his buffoonery for over a decade.

I also like how Hanselmann sometimes doesn’t bother writing real dialogue and just has them saying “Blah blah blah” as they move from one scene to the next (or maybe they really are saying that?), and the slurs are represented as images to get around the “hate speech” it’d be perceived as if they were articulated through letters. It’s very creative and clever. Growing to genuinely care for the characters that Simon Hanselmann has created has got to be the biggest bait and switch in the history of stoner comedy.

Grew a Spine: After years of abuse and ridicule, Owl leaves his friends for good at the end of Megahex.

Author Avatar: Simon Hanselmann has said he sees some of himself in all of the characters, particularly Megg . Took a Level in Badass: Owl becomes a lot more authoritative and confident in "Crisis Zone," where he starts standing up to Werewolf Jones' idiotic and obnoxious behavior for a change. Jaxon also undergoes this, as he eventually gathers the courage to call out his scumbag dad and break free of his malignant influence. Goth Girls Know Magic: She has a moody, withdrawn demeanor and is a witch. Amusingly, she makes sporadic references to casting spells but is almost never seen doing anything magical. Hanselmann refers to her as a "lapsed witch."

Author Appeal: From the characters not only taking increasingly uncensored dumps onscreen, but eventually engaging in actual scat-play, which is also increasingly uncensored, it's pretty clear that these scenes are less just extreme Toilet Humor and more pointing to Hanselmann actually having a thing for coprophilia. Kavorka Man: In spite of his dorky, unappealing personality and rampant substance abuse, Owl is constantly having sex. However, it's not portrayed as something admirable, as he never forms any meaningful relationships and he's contracted numerous venereal diseases. He's attracted to Megg but she's not interested, so he constantly seeks out shallow flings with other women to fill the void.

Owl constantly feels the need to be in a romantic or sexual relationship with somebody. He states that he has had over 100 partners in total. [13] I turned 31 last December, four days before Christmas. I spent it in a hot tub, drinking champagne, gazing out across the ocean. I was born in Tasmania. Tasmania is a small island/sovereign state at the bottom of Australia. It is densely haunted by convicts' ghosts -- highest rate of ghosts per square kilometer in the world. I was born in Launceston, the second largest population center in Tasmania. A real shit hole. Highest crime rate per capita in Australia. I detest it. WWJ wants the money from a Princess contest, so he forces two of his sons to dress up in drag. They win the contest.
