About this deal

I was hoping that Nomadic Furniture would have more creative ideas in this same vein: cheap, attractive, and highly mobile options for someone with some woodworking skill and an eye for design. While such ideas definitely exist in this book (I gave it four stars, after all), they were in my opinion sparsely distributed. One would be hard-pressed to find a single area of our everyday lives and material culture that has not been swept up in the “participatory revolution” of the past several years. With the do-it-yourself movement now an omnipresent phenomenon, the design field’s current development is increasingly characterized by the fusion of production and consumption. The problematic issues raised by this “prosumer culture” range from a perceived need to decentralize and democratize goods production to both the criticism of mass consumption and the theme of sustainability in light of ongoing resource depletion. This project is based on a structure without any kind of screws, nails or glue. The system works through connections inspired by traditional wooden joinery that can be assembled and disassembled by hand, with small gestures in (approx) 2 minutes. This fact allows the user to move easily with the seat from one place to another, emphasising dynamism as the object´s inherent purpose.

The 1970s was a golden era for DIY furniture manuals. Two of my favorites are Nomadic Furniture, and Nomadic Furniture 2 by designers Victor Papanek and James Hennessy. Nomadic Furniture . The MAK Museum in Vienna did an exhibition of Papanek and Hennessy’s work and put out a catalog called Nomadic furniture 3.0. You can watch a 2013 lecture James Hennessy did about his work on the YouTubes.

A stud is a vertical 2x4 (actually 1.5" x 3.5") in your wall to which is mounted either drywall or lath and plaster. Lath and plaster is a pain in the butttt. Drywall is nice. Either way, the studs are placed 16" apart. There are several ways to find a stud:

The plywood squares are used for the desktop. I used the handheld circular saw to cut one in half, but a table saw would have helped immensely (too big for the Christmas list). Here we will be adding the supports for the wings to the main desk. The supports will be lined up with the pieces that were added to the frame. The 1970s was a golden era for DIY furniture manuals. One of the best is Nomadic Furniture, a 1973 book by designers Victor Papanek and James Hennessy. The Vienna's MAK presents 50 iconic bicycles from the 20th and 21st centuries that tell about the quality and diversity of the design for this increasingly popular transportation mode. News Isaacs’ method, sometimes called “Grid Beam” relies on either wood or metal with a regular series of holes drilled to accept bolts. Grid Beam is modular and you can use the method to make chairs, tables, beds and rooms. Pieces can be taken apart, reused and reconfigured. If you want to try it you’ll definitely want a drill press and a jig to make the holes uniform and square. Thankfully you can find many used drill presses in the wild as they are a common tool in both wood and metal shops.

Most woodworking instruction has an unintentional, high 1980s postmodernist vibe. As a perpetual contrarian I’m waiting for the big postmodern design revival. Embrace the glitch!

The plan is to keep adding to this post. If you know of books and resources for cheap, easy to make, well designed furniture leave a comment. For every resource that I’ve mentioned there’s probably a dozen more. When possible I’ve linked to free pdfs or books you can borrow at the Internet Archive. News from Dezeen Events Guide, a listings guide covering the leading design-related events taking place around the world. Plus occasional updates. Dezeen Awards China News about our Dezeen Awards programme, including entry deadlines and announcements. Plus occasional updates. Dezeen Events Guide was originally of my own design, but in the course of investigating various options for my design's specifics, I discovered this book: Nomadic Furniture. The book is not quite what I expected, nor exactly what the description would lead you to believe, but more about that in a moment. First let's talk about my bookshelves. Rotate the corner of the desk up until the screw matches the hole and then drive it the rest of the way into the wall. Somewhat snug -- you still need to be able to rotate the desk up.The 1x2s support the wings of the desktop while it is open. I used the "hhcs" for this as well, but would have preferred mitered ends... You don’t need a lot of tools or experience to make furniture. Over the years we’ve posted about simple DIY furniture resources, mostly, but not all, from the 1970s, and I thought I’d collect those posts into one mega post.

I think this is a little ridiculous. I'm not sure I know anyone over the age of 10 who would actually want a room built up like this. (Perhaps these flights of fancy are just another way the book is dated and silly room themes were common in the 70s?). Cut one of the sheets of plywood in half. Which one, and in what orientation is up to you. I tried to match the grains up a little. NOMADIC FURNITURE 3.0 offers a comprehensive overview of contemporary DIY furniture culture while using numerous historical references and examples to also present a clear picture of the developmental history of the DIY movement from its nascence in the early 20th century to the present Web 2.0 culture.Drill a pilot hole in one of the outter studs. The height of this hole is determined by how high you want the desk. You may want some people to help you hold up the desk temporarily while you find a good height. Mine ended up being 25.5" from the ground, which is iffy given the carpet. In today’s world, do-it-yourself culture is practically omnipresent: be it fashion, furniture, cooking or communication—hardly a single area of everyday life and our material culture has not been swept up in the DIY revolution. With its emphasis on the field of furniture design, the exhibition NOMADIC FURNITURE 3.0. New Liberated Living is the first to examine this movement situated on the threshold between the subcultural and the mainstream including a look at its historical context: as early as the first half of the 20th century, home-built furniture came to be regarded as a suitable approach for socially conscious and (since the late 1960s) ecologically sustainable design.
