About this deal

They discover all sorts of things as they look into the case including a drug sting. Albert and Rex attract the attentions of the villains and have his room at the B&B where he is staying firebombed.

Pork Pie Pandemonium is book #1 of the Albert Smith's Culinary Capers series by Steve Higgs. This book is about Albert Smith, a retired British Police Superintendent in his mid-70s, who after the death of his wife, has started taking cooking lessons in different English towns. He has 3 adult children: 2 boys and 1 girl, all in their 40s or 50s. The children are police officers in a different British town. He also has an assistance dog, a former Police K-9 named Rex Harrison, and yes, he is named after the actor of the same name. Albert is in his first cooking class, learning how to make the perfect pork pie, when one of the other students screams bloody murder. She has found a human thumb on top of her pile of pork. So, the police are called to the scene: DS (Detective Sergeant) Moss, a lady in her 40s; and DC (Detective Constable) Wright, a man in his 30s. To deal with his inability to cook , he has decided to undertake a culinary tour of UK's better know foods with Protected Geographical Status, and learn how to make them. Steve’s fascination with books had been honed by years in the army spent attuning his radar for a good story. In the army, he continued writing short stories and occasionally long manuscripts that he would dump in storage never to be seen again. Some of these were very entertaining but he did not believe they were worthy of publication. However, things changed when he envisaged an ordinary man who is by mistake advertised as an investigator of the paranormal. While he had always believed that ghosts, vampires, and the paranormal were just people’s hallucinations, he started thinking, what if someone wanted to hire someone to deal with bizarre happenings. The character knew there were enough people who believed in the paranormal to make such a profession viable. He wrote “Paranormal Nonsense” in five years and “The Phantom of Barker” her second only took five months given that he had all the time in the world to do it. His two novels took no time to rise up the ranks and become bestselling titles. This opened the floodgates and Steve Higgs became a prolific author with more than 40 novels to his name in the “Blue Moon Investigations,” “Blue Moon Origins,” “Patricia Fisher Mystery,” “Realm of False Gods,” “Patricia Fisher Village Mystery,” and “Albert Smith’s Culinary Capers” series. As a man that has always been a voracious reader, Higgs has been most inspired by Stephen King who he deems one of the greatest storytellers of this generation. While he is not a huge fan of horror fiction, he always tries to emulate King’s ability to draw and capture the reader. However, what he most loves is comedy and humor, action and fantasy fiction, that he reads from the likes of Jim Butcher, Janet Evanovich, and Lee Child. Denying to believe in coincidence, Albert and Rex prepare to discover why her accident is the second terrible event in two days. It appears something is baking in Bakewell, and it’s not the ingredients of the famous dessert.I just love how Rex Harrison interprets his human's behavior and his thoughts are hilarious! Anyone who knows and loves dogs should read this series. The author has got to be very familiar with dogs and their behavior to be so spot on with Rex's thoughts and behavior. He also prepared himself to tour the country to do sampling and learn to make famous British culinary even when his children disapproved of it. Alberts’s first stop is Melton Mowbray, where he was visiting Agnew’s pork Pie emporium to earn skills on how to prepare a perfect pork pie. He hopes to get the right skills to make tasty treats and delicious pies. His dog Rex Harrison was an ex-police dog disowned due to its bad attitude. Rex can’t understand why humans find it hard to solve the mystery. He already has the answer, as he can smell it in front of their noses.

Overall, Pork Pie Pandemonium is a fun story. The circumstances surrounding the incident in the pie shop are mysterious and more dangerous than initially believed. Rex is quite a character himself, often providing some comedy with his antics, but never to the detriment of the story. Mystery fans and dog lovers will be sure to enjoy this book and will be looking forward to reading the rest of the series. About the Author Everything that began as fun is getting more deadly with time, and they have to work out what the dog knows soon enough, or it could take a different turn. They have to identify the owner of the thumb before taking any other step. It is even more, easier because it has a unique tattoo on it. Rex, Albert, and Donna visit the tattoo parlors, trying to identify the thumb’s owner. Pork Pie Pandemonium is Albert Smith’s Culinary Capers series debut. Albert, the retired detective, had begun his happy retirement, but soon the wife passed away. His three children are all grown up, and police officers are worried about his health, especially his memory loss. I saw the cover of this recommended book as I arrived to flat/dog sit for my daughter. Lobo and Rex Harrison may look the same but whereas Rex Harrison is an adult dog with a basic discipline, Lobo is still less than a year old with puppyish behavior. Nevertheless, I recognized similarities in behaviors and perhaps now I understand more of Lobo's thoughtful glances.

I liked that Albert is 78 and quite a bit slower and creakier than he was in his working days. He's experiencing some memory issues and, at one point in the story, gets lost while doing some investigating. He also, like many of us older adults, finds himself in a crucial situation with a cellphone in need of a charge. I really like his relationship with Rex who has quite a mind of his own and who gets a chance to use his training in the story. The Bakewell Tart Bludgeoning. The Bakewell Tart is the star of this book. There was lots of action, murder & attempted murder, mystery with a B&B, a class in baking the famous Tart (or pudding? Excellent historical aside about the difference). I loved Albert and Rex. What a joy to welcome Albert as a senior sleuth with all his law enforcement training and experience, not ready to stay home and vegetate on the couch. Rex's commentary (not heard by humans) and annoyance at some human responses had me laughing out loud many times. Things take a different turn when a thumb is discovered on one of the meats piles the class members were supposed to use to make the pies. He finds a clue to a crime when he thinks of getting skills. As the owner is in hospital after getting appendix surgery, her teenage daughter, Donna, is running the Agnew’s. She believes it’s one of the latest pranks pulled by owners of the Simmons pork pie across the alleyway. Soon Donna and Albert learn that it belongs to a night guard at the Simmons. Pork Pie Pandemonium is a thrilling mystery set in modern England. Albert is a friendly and exciting character but can be stubborn at times as he insists on solving the mystery. The story has a sense of humor and suspense to keep the readers engaged. No graphic descriptions of violence or cussing, so readers who are not fans of violence shouldn’t shy away.

At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written. Baking. It can get a guy killed. ‘When Steve Higgs writes, he hits it out of the park. I find myself laughing out loud and often.’ When a retired detective superintendent chooses to take a culinary tour of the British Isles, he hopes to find tasty treats and delicious bakes …… what he finds is a clue to a crime in the ingredients for his pork pie. His dog, Rex Harrison, an ex-police dog fired for having a bad attitude, cannot understand why the humans are struggling to solve the mystery. He can already smell the answer – it’s right before their noses. He’ll pitch in to help his human and the shop owner’s teenage daughter as the trio set out to save the shop from closure. Is the rival pork pie shop across the street to blame? Or is there something far more sinister going on? One thing is for sure, what started out as a bit of fun, is getting deadlier by the hour, and they’d better work out what the dog knows soon or it could be curtains for them all.’ This series has it all; everything I want in a story and series … humour, suspense, and colourful characters. It’s one of my top all-time favourite series.’ This series of books contain no cussing and no graphic descriptions of violence or bedroom activities. Pork Pie Pandemonium (Albert Smith’s Culinary Capers Recipe 1) by Steve Higgs – eBook Details This story starts with a bored, retired Detective Superintendent Albert Smith and his dog Rex Harrison; who can talk, sadly no one can hear him no, matter how hard he tries. Rex is a failed police dog who has issues with obedience. To be honest, as soon as I read that I just knew that this was going to be a brilliant book! Im Anschluss an die gemütliche Krimi-Geschichte, die einen ganz eigenen Charme besitzt, gibt es nicht nur die Story um den traditionellen Pork Pie Englands, sondern auch das Rezept. who was widowed exactly one year ago yesterday, is embarking on a culinary tour of his native England with his “assistance dog,” Rex Harrison. The German Shepherd is “the only dog in the history of the Metropolitan police to have been fired for having a bad attitude,” but he and Albert are fond of each other and work well together. His dog, Rex Harrison, an ex-police dog fired for having a bad attitude, cannot understand why the humans are struggling to solve the mystery. He can already smell the answer – it’s right before their noses. The other character I like is Donna, age 16, who took over her family restaurant when her mom had to undergo surgery in the hospital. The thumb was found in her restaurant. Since the police have shut down the restaurant until the thumb incident is solved, she keeps Alfred and Rex company by helping them solve the case. She is the first one to realize that Rex is trying to talk to them about the case.
