About this deal

If the sealant around your windows or doors is becoming old, faulty, or beings to start breaking apart, then you should think about removing it and replacing it with new sealant. Weather stripping is an incredibly cheap product that does wonders for winterization. It takes an extra step after you remove the door of debris by sealing any other exposed edges. When you combine new weatherstripping with other forms of insulation you can reduce or eliminate drafts, as well as keep warm heat inside the home. They are very easy and affordable steps to take to make your house more energy-efficient as well as comfortable in the winter. Sealing Sliding Patio Doors for Winter

If you are renting your home, it has to be fit for habitation and it’s your landlord’s responsibility to ensure this. If your house is too cold (or swelteringly hot) or damp, then this is a danger to your health and the landlord must make necessary repairs. Once each slab has been cleaned, allow for 3 consecutive dry days to ensure all the moisture has completely dried out from the slabs. If there is any moisture on the surface when you seal your patio, the sealant will often react with the moisture and turn a milky colour which is known as 'blooming' and ruin the slabs - so please ensure the slabs are bone dry. Whilst the blooming process is reversible, it's best avoided where possible! Let’s start with the external frame. Make sure that there are no gaps around the outside of the frame. If you see any gaps, fill them with insulation foam. For example, if your door is 90 inches (230 cm) tall and 40 inches (100 cm) wide, you need a seal that is at least 260 inches (660 cm) in length.

Measure the gap between the bottom of your door and the floor and then cut the strip to a suitable length, making sure that the bristles of the brush reach the floor before screwing the bar in place. Always obtain at least 3 separate quotes for the job so that you can ensure you’re getting a good price For ongoing maintenance, we recommend you clean treated areas with Universeal Easy Clean, do not use harsh or abrasive cleaning agents as this can have a negative effect on the treated surface. The most common way to seal the top and sides of an external door is to use self-adhesive strips, which can be made of rubber, foam or brush. Installing these strips can be as simple as peeling off the rear layer of tape and pushing the strips up into the corners of your frame, forming a tight seal between the door and the frame. Right now, we use silicone. With arguably better alternatives out there, is it time to ditch silicone in favour of something else? Outdated installation methodIf your application looks uneven and patchy, you could try a second, repeat application to even out the sealer’s distribution. Weather bars and drop-down seals are another option. Weather bars are fitted to the outside of the door, and act as a lip to direct water flow away from your home. They do not provide thermal insulation, so they are usually used with a seal or draught excluder on the interior side of the door. After you have cleared away the old sealant, be sure to clean the edges so that there is no dust or debris present. If you are applying a second or third coat, wait for the previous coat to begin to dry out before applying the next coat. This takes around an hour. The overall cost for labour can vary depending on several factors including the size of the window, the number of doors or windows that need to be replaced, and the location of your property.

It's important to ensure your area is ready to accept the sealer. Once applied, it's permanent - so any dirt or debris that is trapped under the sealer is going to remain there. Clean, clean, clean! Think of it this way, the state your patio is in when you begin sealing is the way it is going to stay - so don't seal it until you are happy with it. Step 1: Waiting after installation The best way to clean patio door windows, without any leftover streaks, is to use a solution made from white distilled vinegar and softened water mixed together in a spray bottle, wiping down with a clean sponge or 100% cotton cloth. Purchasing a squeegee blade is a must for a streak-free window, too! Before your cleaning solution has had time to dry, use a squeegee either horizontally or vertically to wipe away any left over drips to avoid smears. As a result, if you really want to maximize on your heating bill — not to mention feel more comfortable in your home during the winter months — you need to winterize a sliding patio door. The size of the doors or windows that you are resealing can affect the overall cost of the job. The larger the windows or doors, the more you can expect to pay. You will need more materials for larger windows or doors, and the job will also take longer, so this will result in higher costs. Location of Property Insulating patio doors is something that needs to be thought about at the purchasing stage. Patio doors cause a lot of heat loss compared to solid, wooden doors and so they must be insulated accordingly. Start by purchasing double, or even triple glazed windows for your door. The air is trapped between the glazing resulting in a reduced loss of heat through your doors and windows. Rigid door sweeps will not work if the carpet is higher or even with the threshold. When rigid door sweeps won't work, use flexible bulb weather stripping made of vinyl. This attaches to the threshold right under the door. [10] X Research source
