About this deal

The optical design of the SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary isbased on the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art, which is renowned for itsoutstanding optical performance throughout its zoom range. True to theContemporary line's core concept, the 28-70mm F2.8DG DN was developedto offer the right balance of performance and portability, and as such, thislarge-aperture standard zoom delivers outstanding image quality that rivalsArt line lenses in a body light enough for day-to-day use.

A lens with a maximum aperture of F2.8 is fairly good in low light, though obviously not as good as lenses with even larger maximum apertures. In many cases, cameras will focus with the lens aperture wide open and then close it down to the preset aperture choice at the moment of capture. A lens with a smaller maximum aperture is going to be at a disadvantage in low light conditions because the physical aperture is smaller than alternative lenses, meaning that less light can reach the sensor. F2.8 is what I would call a “medium” maximum aperture, but it is wide enough that one should be able to shoot weddings or events with the lens and get solid results. Mirrorless Cameras Canon EOS-M Cameras Canon EOS-R Mirrorless Cameras Fujifilm X Mirrorless Cameras Nikon Z Cameras Sony Alpha Cameras Panasonic Lumix S Cameras Panasonic Lumix G Cameras Olympus OM-D & PEN Cameras Canon EOS-M Mirrorless Cameras This lens provides the same high-level optical performance and precision as Sigma's 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art but in a much lighter, more portal and more manageable shell. The lens is 359g lighter than its counterpart and this is mainly due to the use of a TSC Polycarbonate (TSC) in its construction. This can bring about some concerns about processing accuracy, but rest assured, there's been no compromise with this lens build. This type of polycarbonate provides a similar level of thermal shrinkage as aluminium and this helps reduce the difference between thermal shrinkage of the lens's metal and non-metal parts. This results in stable performance, even when transiting between extreme temperatures. What's in the box? Like other lenses in Sigma’s I-series Contemporary line-up, the 20mm has impressive build quality based on a coated brass mounting plate, a metal barrel and even a metal lens hood and lens cap, the latter of which is magnetic. A more regular plastic lens cap is also supplied in the box. The construction features multiple weather-seals and is dust- and moisture-resistant, it combines intuitive handling with fast autofocus and impressive image quality, making it an ideal ultra-wide-angle lens for architectural interiors, sweeping landscapes, astrophotography and more besides.Key features 1. Design based on SIGMA’s Art line lenses, with the same uncompromising optical performance As much as I like this lens, there are some things worth pointing out. No lens is perfect for every photographer and in optical design — there are always tradeoffs — but this might help if you’re deciding if this particular lens will fit your needs. Results at 70mm follow a similar pattern, but with softer results overall, particularly at close focus distances. Wide open, portraits can often look a little dreamy. The 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN, Contemporary introduces another fast, high-performance, large-aperture zoom lens to SIGMA’s mirrorless line-up, offering a more compact alternative to the existing 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art.

Taking a close look in the middle reveals plenty of fine details even with the aperture wide-open, and closing the aperture makes little difference to the quality.Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. The SIGMA 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary redefines the standard zoom for mirrorless cameras by combining outstanding optical performance, an F2.8 constant aperture, and a lightweight and compact body. The design of the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary is based on the existing 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art, but with a focal range starting at 28mm, making the lens body significantly smaller and lighter while maintaining superb optical performance. It is the smallest and lightest lens in its class*. Remaining true to the Contemporary line’s core concept of maintaining an optimal balance between optical performance and lens size, this new optic delivers professional quality results in a body small enough to take on a casual outing. A little bit of longitudinal chromatic aberration can be seen as magenta and cyan color fringing around high contrast edges in the image above. It's subtle enough to be a non-issue for the most part, and goes away as you stop down the lens. Shooting wide-open at F2.8 (which you'll quite likely want to spend much of your time doing if you've bought this lens for its bright maximum aperture), sharpness is very acceptable in the center of the frame at 28mm and remains pretty good even once you zoom in to the 70mm telephoto.
