About this deal

Now here is the area you can put a little flair and extra colors. For my specialists, I wanted them to feel like part of my army, so I kept largely the same color palette, just adding dashes of other colors into the mix, and changing the locations to make them look special without making them look like they don’t belong. The Steel Legion Drab paint is a magnificent choice for a wide range of Warhammer 40K armies, as it provides a solid foundation for further layers of paint and allows you to create a wide range of effects. Here are three armies that are well-suited to be painted with Steel Legion Drab:

Base the model how you see fit – here I used Stirland Mud drybrushed with Baneblade Brown, a little static grass and a tuft. I always use XV-88 for the rim of my collection. mix of Vallejo Game Color Dead Flesh and Pallid Wych Flesh but only on the edge of the yellow blobs

Wild Rider Red: A rich, warm orange shade that is perfect for adding depth and richness to your miniatures. When paired with Steel Legion Drab, it creates a convincing, weathered finish that is evocative of old, rusted metal.

Adam: There are a few ways to do this. You can paint or draw a little mark in the centre to use as a guide, but our option of choice is to make a little indent with a pin or the point of a hobby knife . This helps to keep your Citadel Drill centred as it begins to turn, and then it’s just a matter of keeping it straight. If you’re under 16, you might want to ask a responsible adult to do the knife-pointing though, as the smallest slip can be disastrous for your hand. Coats: I started by painting the entire model (save the weapons) in Steel Legion Drab. I layered up the coat with Tallarn Sand, leaving Steel Legion Drab in the recesses. Finally, I highlighted the edges with Karak Stone. I applied sponge chipping. I hit the decals and colored areas with a little bit of VMC khaki to simulate chipping down to the base paint layer. Then I went over the entire model with Skavenblight Dinge sponge chipping. I then sponge chipped with leadbelcher very sparingly. it’s easy to go overboard witht he metallics. Being lazy about waiting for the chipping medium to dry, since the medium behaves weirdly through the airbrush I find it tends to pool occasionally resulting in areas that take longer to dry. You can exploit this by just not quite letting it dry in those spots as it will give a good impression of a larger patch of paint falling off after a bit of gentle rubbing with a damp brush. The Imperium is massive, and its core strength comes from its people. There is rarely, if ever, an Imperial conflict that doesn’t involve the Astra Militarum and its forces. As such, they’ve been involved in every major conflict in the Imperium’s history, from the Horus Heresy and the battle for Terra, where Solar Auxiliaries helped defend the Emperor’s Palace, to the Fall of Cadia and the ensuing Indomitus Crusade. The guard are made of a great many regiments whose deeds are legendary, from the Steel Legions of Armageddon to the indomitable forces of Cadia, who held even after the planet itself was destroyed. Imperial Guard: The Imperial Guard is the primary army of the Imperium in Warhammer 40K, comprising a vast and varied collection of soldiers, tanks, and artillery. The Steel Legion Drab paint is a perfect choice for creating a realistic, weathered finish on their armor, machinery, and vehicles. It also allows you to create a foundation for further layers of paint that captures the sense of old, battered equipment. I then applied the transfers, spraying varnish over them. (This is the last bit of varnish until the end, I swear). Finally, I added a coat of matte varnish to everything. The weapons are actually magnetized so they can be switched out, but that’s it’s own separate article. The entire thing took me around an hour, which is not bad when you’ve got ten of them to do! I’m looking forward to getting the rest of the squad painted up ready for some Kill Team, or as the basis for a future expansion of my existing Astra Militarum army with some newer and shinier models.

The blade is almost exclusively glazes over Mephiston, you could replicate this by just mixing on your palette to approximate the glazes. Are Technical paints like Armageddon Dust best applied with a regular brush or a Citadel Texture Spreader ?

I first airbrushed the tank solid VMC Khaki, the same color as the fatigues of my guardsmen. I then varnished over it. The silver metals are just Old Silver from Darkstar Miniatures, and the bronze barrel of the plasma pistol is a layer of Bronze and then Antique Gold, washed Sepia, and then highlighted Antique Gold again. The blue glow of the plasma and the barrel builds up from Teclis Blue through Lothern Blue, Baharroth Blue, and then just a touch of white, and the eyes are Khorne Red to Mephiston Red to just a dot of Wild Rider Red.
