Reflecting on the album, frontman Brett Anderson says: “It was a genuinely magical time in my life and one for which I’ll always be grateful. It felt incredible being in what I thought was quite probably the most exciting band in the world at the time, making a record which felt like more than just another band making another album.”

That’s a really exciting prospect – that a band at our stage of our career haven’t just settled for running through the motions. I love making new records: it makes my heart beat faster, it’s what I get up for in the morning.” On the other hand, Anderson has elsewhere stressed that the songs are not autobiographical, but "often imaginary situations based on real sentiments, or real situations taken to their logical extreme". When asked about the pervasive use of the word "he" in his songs, Anderson stated that "too much music is about a very straightforward sense of sexuality... Twisted sexuality is the only kind that interests me. The people that matter in music... don't declare their sexuality. Morrissey never has and he's all the more interesting for that". [26] Title and artwork [ edit ] Whilst performing Autofiction in front of tens of thousands of fans at an entirely sold-out and rapturously received UK tour, Suede marked 30 years to the day since the release of their self-titled debut album with a very special surprise set.

The debut Suede album didn’t want a scrap with the Northern alleged hard bastards or mix with The Mixer crowd in Camden. They created a sound which still hits you in the gut today. Butler’s guitar sound is revered everywhere to this day and Anderson, although called a Bowie copiest with his gender flirting and arse slapping on stage like a Morrissey without the daffs and hearing aid was a commanding force. The outsiders inside have come up trumps recently with the amazing Autofiction reviewed here by Ged Babey which easily matches their debut and confirms Suede as one our best British bands ever.London was a touchstone for everyone in the band, so the album became about us being placed in this city of sex, drugs and poverty after living in these suburban satellite towns. London is full of a certain kind of arts professional—people in bands whose parents bought them guitars when they were 12 and went to state school. The sense in all of us was that we wanted to get revenge on all that as the underclass outsider punks. We wanted Suede to be a pop record in the way that The Pretenders' "Stop Your Sobbing" is a pop record." Roberts, David (2006). British Hit Singles & Albums (19thed.). London: Guinness World Records Limited. p.538. ISBN 1-904994-10-5. Charts upon its release. Selling over 100,000 copies in its first week, becoming the fastest-selling debut album ever in the UK at that time, Suede also won the prestigious Mercury Campion, Freddie (23 April 2012).
