While we’re on the subject of audio, let’s dig into the speakers. They’re fine. Just fine. For the price, I wasn’t expecting something as vibrant as the ROG Ally, but they do the job. At higher volumes they’re insufferable, and they don’t have a particularly strong range – audio layers sound almost mushed together. But, again, this is a budget handheld we’re talking about. Compared with the RetroMini, these speakers are great for the price point. Controls. As well as featuring different game selections, they also look distinct too, with both versions having a different colour scheme which not only makes it easy to differentiate them but also adds in a collectible element.

L2 and R2 are on the outside though and I feel like I instinctively try to use the joint of my finger to press these while keeping the tips of my fingers on L1 and R1 to maintain a good grip on the device, but this just feels a bit awkward to me. Pixel perfect scaling adjusts the horizontal and vertical size of the game display so it is a clean multiple of the original game’s resolution. This helps prevent individual pixels from appearing “uneven” and also helps reduce “shimmering” effects on scrolling screens. The trade-off is that the game will usually not fill the whole display. Arcade games could be pretty brutal, after all!I think the main problem is that it’s just maybe positioned in a slightly difficult place in the market and could have probably done with a more diverse set of pre-installed games to really push it into the spotlight. First off the screen is incredible, especially considering the price of the device. The 2.8 inch IPS display has incredible viewing angles and the colours of these games are extremely vibrant.

The overall design is obviously very reminiscent of the Nintendo Game Boy but with some welcome modern refinements. This is pretty incredible because it dramatically extends the amount of time you can spend playing with the device but it also has several other massive bonuses too.
