Christgau, Robert (1990). "The English Beat: I Just Can't Stop It". Christgau's Record Guide: The '80s. Pantheon Books. ISBN 0-679-73015-X . Retrieved 4 May 2009. The DVD has a couple of videos and Top Of The Pops appearances. They were on that show five times in total during this period, the high charting of the singles allowing them two performances apiece for Tears Of A Clown and Hands Off…She’s Mine. The highlight of the video material is a short but sweaty live performance of Hands Off…She’s Mine performed live in the Top Rank Suite venue in Birmingham . This was broadcast on British TV on 12 December 1980 in a programme called Alright Now. There is some before-show banter from the band (“I can’t tune this guitar!”) and an brave attempt at mixing live action and animation ( Roger Rabbit eat your heart out). Cranna, Ian (29 May – 11 June 1980). "The Beat: I Just Can't Stop It". Smash Hits. Vol.2, no.11. p.30. I wasn't that much into the ska-revival movement which came to prominence in the UK in the late 70's but some of it I liked. I'd say there were three main bands who flew the flag, The Specials who I never cared for, too po-faced, Madness, at times too poppy and The Beat who sort of straddled both and who I probably preferred of all of them.

Today’s CD is “I Just Can’t Stop It” By The English Beat. If things has gone to plan, I would be heading for a train at Bedford Station to take me to Harpenden to see The Beat – or at least a version of The Beat. Lots of fine pubs in Harpenden. Of well – it has now been changed to 28th June next year – I hope it goes ahead! British album certifications – Beat – I Just Can't Stop It". British Phonographic Industry . Retrieved 19 November 2020.I JUST CAN’T STOP IT (EXPANDED) includes the original album, a selection of rare mixes and live recordings. The original, which peaked at No.3 on the U.K. album chart, featured hit singles like “Hands Off…She’s Mine,” “Twist & Crawl,” and a fiery cover of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles’ “Tears Of A Clown.” The newly expanded version adds alternative mixes for all three songs and a dub version of “Stand Down Margaret.” The double album also includes live recordings from 1982 for “Mirror In The Bathroom,” “Best Friend,” and more. Rhino Entertainment President Mark Pinkus expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership: “I am thrilled to have the incredible opportunity to work with the English Beat catalog. For Rhino to collaborate with such a legendary band is an absolute privilege, as it allows us to immerse ourselves in the timeless magic of their music, share in their creative brilliance, and contribute to the legacy of a group that has inspired generations.” Most excitingly, there is ample video footage of the band on the third disc, a DVD in NTSC format. There are two Top of the Pops performances of “Tears of a Clown” and “Hands Off…She’s Mine” plus singles videos for “Mirror in the Bathroom” and “Best Friend,” and bonus performances of “Alright Now” and “Hands Off.” Filename C:\Users\mark\Music\Rips\FLAC\The Beat\I Just Can’t Stop It\01 - Mirror In the Bathroom.wav

Wha’ppen? (Edsel EDSG 8017), the second of the three reissues, preserves the original 12-song U.K. album sequence on Disc 1. For their sophomore outing, the members of The Beat and returning producer Bob Sargeant opted for a lower-key vibe but with equally sharp lyrics. Album opener “Doors of Your Heart” again espouses the band’s message of “love and unity,” its pretty pop ceding to a proto-rap toasting interlude from Ranking Roger. It sets the pop-reggae tone of the album, with much of the punk fire tamped down, at least in the sense of music and arrangement. The lyrics were still incendiary and in touch with the political climate of the day. The gig is billed as “The Beat Starring Dave Wakeling” – “Still Can’t Stop It” – 40th Anniversary Tour”. So because I am not going, I thought I would play “I Just Got Stop It” the first of three albums released by The Beat – It was released in May 1980 on their own Go-Feet Record label. Now up until fairly recently there were 3 different versions of The Beat – The Beat Goes Bang led by Everett Morton who was drummer in the original band, then there was The Beat featuring Ranking Roger – and sadly Roger died last year – I wrote about his solo album “Radical Departures” a while ago and The English Beat Starring Dave Wakeling. The later were who I was going to see tonight – they seem now to be billed as The Beat Starring Dave Wakeling. Anyway, my CD of “I Just Can’t Stop It” is credited to The English Beat. The reason is I got the album on import because inexplicably for a long time it was not available on CD in this country. And in The States, The Beat have always been billed as “The English Beat” to avoid being confused with an American band called….The Beat. DVD-8 broadcasted on 12th December 1980 and is a film from a live performance at Top Rank Suite, Birmingham. I Just Can't Stop It (liner notes). The Beat. Go-Feet Records. 1980.
