About this deal

There are certainly some downsides brought about by the way cards are gained and the way they are spent. Getting cards can be a bit slow, and unless there’s just the right journey action available, you could end up using several turns where your main action is just drawing cards. That slowness is compounded by the fact that you have to spend cards to move every turn. It can be frustrating at times. While the game is meant to feel like traveling the world, many turns feel more like your flight was delayed at the airport, or at the very least, you’ll have an unexpected layover on the way to your destination. You may think that better planning can get around this, but again, people will be getting in your way and even taking things from you before you get there. Final Thoughts: However, these positive changes do come with a few quirks. The shape of the world map means that the action feels a little bit more separated, especially with fewer players. Unless all of the available Destinations (or cubes of a specific color) are on the same continent, there’s rarely a reason for players to move near each other. That’s not inherently bad: for a family-friendly game it’s nice that players don’t have to claw their way past each other to win. But all hope isn’t lost. We just bump it out for some future, currently unknown, date. We know we’ll get their one day. They do so by discarding cards from their hand. They may play 1 or more cards when moving. The combined value of the numbers on the cards is the exact amount of spaces they will move. The end of the game is triggered when five of the six region tokens are claimed, or when a player tours their fifth card. For the final scoring you add all the points together from the souvenir tiles, the region bonus tokens, victory point tokens, destination cards and the souvenir sets you’ve collected in your suitcase. One set of souvenirs is one complete row from up to down and the points given for that set stands below the souvenirs. The player with the most victory points is the winner!

Overall, Trekking the World is a game the whole family can enjoy playing together. The score pad is helpful to record your points in each area. And of course, it’s a fantastic way to let our minds wander to lands we want to travel to once we’re able to travel again.

Trekking the World is the latest board game published by Underdog Games. It delivers a lot of the familiar game play from Trekking the National Parks while adding a few new elements we really enjoy. Explore the world (and get the most points along the way)! In 2-player games, players can be further spread out on the board — which can make claiming Region bonuses a little easier. After all, if the other player isn’t on the same continent as you, you can walk away with a lot of cubes. Of course, they can be doing the same in their Region. But you can also judge better at which Destinations they may be able to claim before you. The Destination cards then all shift to the right and a new Destination card is revealed. Discard cards matching the symbols on a Destination card to Tour (claim) it. I’m Touring the Taj Mahal. Depending on your outlook, this could be the best-timed release or the worst-timed release, seeing as world travel is currently restricted due to a global pandemic. To me, it’s a pleasant reminder of what was and, hopefully, will be again soon. Trekking the World is a 2-5 player game that takes about 1 hour to play. The gameplay is centered around route planning and set collection. Gameplay Overview:Every game plays out differently because of how the Souvenir cubes get disbursed and which Journey cards are in play. If there is a Souvenir cube on the location they finish on, they take the cube and add it to their Suitcase (in the left-most space for that color). If after placing the cube in their suitcase, they have at least 2 of that color and have more of that color than any other player, they claim the Most Souvenir tile for that souvenir. After a game or two, the movement aspect of Trekking the World becomes more manageable, though younger players might still struggle. Some players may even enjoy jostling each other for position, playing the game more like a defensive battle than a casual tour. Lighting the Globe Trekking the World is an easy to learn family board game where players traverse the continents, visit popular destinations, and collect souvenirs in a race to score the most points.

The game ends when 5 of the 6 Region Bonus tokens have been claimed, or when a player Tours their fifth Destination card. But there are also a number of strategic elements to the game. Getting the most Souvenirs of one type will get you the bonus point tiles. Journey: This action allows players to activate one of the Journey cards on the board. The player must play 2 cards from their hand with matching icons (colors) and then do the actions listed on the Journey card. The actions may include things such as moving X number of extra spaces, moving to any airport, drawing X cards, paying less cards to Take a Tour, or gaining victory points. The Journey cards can provide some helpful actions. Trekking the World can serve a few purposes in a collection. If traveling is one of your hobbies or interests, you will probably get even more enjoyment out of the location descriptions and amazing art. Reminiscing over past trips can add to the overall experience. Those conversations will come about naturally through the gameplay. If there is a cube at the location you finish at, you may take it an place it on your suitcase. If you at any time collect the most souvenirs, or are the first one to reach the star of a color of souvenirs. You can claim the most souvenirs tile of that color. This also means, if another player has the yellow souvenirs tile with three cubes, but you collect four cubes and have now the most yellow souvenirs, you claim the tile from the other player. The souvenirs tiles give you more points at the end of the game. If you collect the last souvenir in a region, you may also take the region bonus token. These tokens will also provide you with bonus points at the end of the game. We’ve had to cancel two big vacations we’d been looking forward to for a long time. One of those would have been this week. We’re totally bummed that we couldn’t be seeing new sights in Asia right now. If the player collects the last Souvenir cube in a Region, they also claim that Region’s Bonus token. They can look at it and keep it face-down next to their suitcase (for scoring at the end of the game). The numbers on the cards are used to traveling that distance. Then players are ready to start traveling! Zipping around the world, collecting souvenirs and touring. Players total up their points from Destinations Toured, Region Bonus tokens, Victory Point tokens, Most Souvenir tiles, and sets of Souvenirs (completed columns of souvenir cubes in their suitcase). The player with the most points is the winner! Souvenir cubes go in your suitcase. Take a Tour: If the player’s Trekker is at a location that matches one of the face-up Destination cards, they may discard cards matching the symbols/colors of that Destination card to claim it. If the Destination card is one of the two farthest to the right, it’s a Must-See destination and the player also claims a Victory Point token (3 point or 5 point) adjacent to that Destination card.

While the rules are very simple to understand and remember, the game also involves interesting choices along the way. Since the Souvenir cubes are open information, players can make strategic moves to snag cubes of certain colors to get a particular Souvenir bonus tile as well as for completing sets of Souvenirs. Players can also make strategically timed moves to grab the last cube in a Region to walk away with the Bonus token. Each player chooses a Trekker and places them on one of the airport locations to begin. They also get a Suitcase sheet that matches their Trekker’s color. Lastly, the Trek cards are shuffled and each player is dealt 3 cards to form their starting hand. The rest of the Trek cards are placed next to the board in a draw pile and 4 are placed face-up. Just like its predecessor, Trekking the World is a great family board game. And that’s exactly why we included both games in our 2020 Board Game Gift Guide. We’ve also found the game plays well at all player counts. So whether it’s just two of us going head-to-head or a full 5-player game with a crowded board, the game is just as fun. In Trekking the World, players are competing to score the most victory points. Players earn victory points by collecting sets of souvenirs (colored cubes), touring destinations, and achieving various bonus scoring. Trek Cards can be played for movement, taking a journey, or touring a destination.
