You’ve got to be a real eagle eye to catch some of the stuff being thrown around in the Unsolved Case Files games and that doesn’t feel great as a player when you were paying attention to the details and instead, you should have caught something semi-random in one of the pieces of evidence.

When you first open the box and start pulling things out, you already feel like a detective getting ready to dive into a cold case. The included documents are contained in a file folder with a name — ASHCROFT, Harmony — and a case number. In Unsolved Case, the detectives are separated. You’ll see different items and clues than your partner and will be tested on your communication!

In general, Unsolved Case Files: Harmony Ashcroft was an above-average, by-the-numbers cold case game and I was glad I tried it. One of those true crime co-op games? Phew. I thought you wanted to play one of those rules-heavy games in the big boxes downstairs!”

That said, I don't know how you could present an unsolved case that was more difficult to solve and more like a true cold case without it being too difficult to be enjoyable. The Harmony Ashcroft Case was also the first game from Unsolved Case Files, so it's entirely plausible that there's a wider range of cases now that vary in difficulty. It is immersive and compelling, and so obviously well crafted. As with many other games like this, you get out what you put in; suspend disbelief, consider these characters as real people and allow yourself to take on the role of a PI. This is how you get the most out of this gem.

Needs work

The informal dialogue used in statements and interviews are more of a mixed bag. They are always written as if spoken, with characters going on tangents and using ellipses to show when they lose their train of thought. This works well in the interview documents but can be jarring in the witness statements. It’s hard to imagine the friend of someone who was recently murdered writing about who they think will win the big game later in a witness statement to the police. The best part of the game is the “AHA!” moments. On the second objective, we were about to hit the hint button when my son blurted out: “Look at this ! It matches the information found on which means this suspect was lying!” Sure enough, entering those two pieces of evidence moved the game along, and he had a huge beaming smile from having solved that part of the mystery.

If the documents you choose to prove your answer are wrong, it won’t let you keep moving forward in the case until you’ve proven the answer and given the right documents for that proof. IIf your family loves murder mysteries, I highly recommend this game. It’s like you’re a detective solving a real murder case. Come Join Us! My wife gives it to me straight for our weekly Friday night gaming sessions. Some nights, she wants to play 7 Wonders: Duel. Some nights she will happily dial up something heavier like Vital Lacerda’s Vinhos Deluxe Edition. Players must complete three objectives, given one after the other. They usually involve finding a discrepancy in the statements provided by suspects or finding something the original detectives overlooked; in the Harmony Ashcroft case, for example, the first objective is to prove the innocence of the suspect who was arrested for the crime. In the Max Cahill case, you need to work out how the killer got to the victim. Each game is a file folder full of the entire case from detective notes to photos and maps and even suspect statements. By combing through the case, you’ll be able to solve it! What ages would like Unsolved Case Files?As mentioned, the game is suitable for those aged 14 and up. You could play it alone if you wanted, but, as we found, more heads are better. Four seemed like a good number, but you really could play it with as many as you want for more brainpower. With the four of us playing, it took us around two hours to solve the mystery. I have an 11 year old and it’s a little too gruesome for her. She is a sensitive kid, so I didn’t want her to see photos of the dead body. My kids are hooked on these games. We love them. It’s often a Friday night thing to do. We spread it all out on the kitchen table and argue about who the killers are. It’s great fun!
