After fermenting, these ingredients are added to Aluna’s core elements: a premium mix of Caribbean and Guatemalan rum. Two spirits come together to create a rum blend that is characterful and clean, bearing classic warm spiciness and a well-rounded body.

Pour all rum and soda into a glass of cubed ice. Add freshly squeezed lime juice, stir and serve with slices of lime We put 60 white, dark and spiced rums to the test, asking a panel of spirits experts and consumers to score each tipple on its complexity, balance, length and finish. There are plenty of sipping rums out there, designed to be supped straight up – or maybe with ice. These may be served in a tumbler, or in a snifter for swilling in your palm like brandy. Look for interesting types of ageing, such as the types of barrels used. How long was it aged for, and was a solera system involved? Famously used for sherry, this method involves passing the liquid through a set of differently aged barrels and allowing it time to rest in each, imbuing it with a more complex flavour. Much like Malibu, Aluna Coconut Rum technically isn’t a rum under EU law. It is bottled at 35% ABV. Standard Malibu is 21% ABV in the UK. It is really a rum based spirit drink. It may not have the depth and character of some of the more “serious” varieties of flavored and spiced rums, but coconut rum holds a revered place in the pantheon of fruity drinks. It's not highly alcoholic, and diluting it even further with soda or fruit juice means it's great for daytime sipping. 4. Can you drink coconut rum by itself?

Made with no added sugars or artificial flavourings, Aluna Rum draws its light sweetness from first press sugar cane and a special strain of yeast from the pineapple plant.

Lighter rums mix well with citrus and tropical flavours, hence the ubiquitous mojito (white rum, lime, mint, sugar/syrup and soda water) or holiday favourites such as the daiquiri (hold the mint and soda from the mojito and serve in a swankier glass) and piña colada (add pineapple juice and coconut milk/cream). Shake all the ingredients together with crushed ice, strain and serve. Garnish with coffee beans and grated chocolate, et voila. The perfect serve. I found with Koko Kanu that you got a real residue of granulated sugar around the screw cap. I have had this bottle of Aluna for some time now. I’ve not noticed any sugar granules forming either in the rum or around the closure. Aluna Coconut Rum is an all-natural spirit that’s bursting with authentic flavours of the Caribbean. What is Malibu rum? Malibu is a coconut-flavored liqueur made with Caribbean rum. It's not technically a rum because the alcohol level is low (21% ABV) and it's made with added sugar. Rum must be 80 proof (40% ABV) to be legally considered rum, and it has no added sugar. 3. Is coconut rum alcoholic?

Aluna Coconut Rum is surprisingly shippable and very enjoyable. The nose is transferred across into the sip. Toasted coconut, coconut water, vanilla, toffee and just enough alcohol to remind you this is 35% ABV. They suggest adding ice. Again its quite refreshing to see that they are confident to not just mix this drink. The crafting of Aluna Rum involves the careful selection of rums from esteemed distilleries in Guatemala, which are then blended with an all-natural toasted coconut flavour. This presents a characterful, aromatic profile that is both accessible and elegantly refined. The coconut utilised in Aluna presents a lower glycemic index compared to other coconut rums, hence providing a lighter, more subtle sweetness that is both inviting and satisfying without being overly saccharine.

Rum’s flavours range from the light, bright and tropical (think pineapple, mango, vanilla, maybe a hint of spice – Bajan rums are a good example) to deep, dark and rich (chocolate, coffee, burnt sugar, even liquorice – typified by Guyanese rums). Running alongside the coconut notes is a nicely balanced vanilla and light toffee from the rum. With many “coco-rums” particularly those suspicious bottles you find in mainland Europe, the alcohol is overwhelming and rather unpleasant. No such problems here. This is really nice. It is sweet but compared to Koko Kanu and Malibu there is definitely a huge step down in the sugar levels. It measured on the Hydrometer at 25g/L whereas I couldn’t get a reading of Koko Kanu (suggesting over 100 g/L of additives).

Aluna Coconut Rum Details

Aluna Coconut Rum. A new addition to UK shelves in 2017 was Aluna Coconut Rum. For many Koko Kanu offers a more respectable alternative to the perennial pub and club favourite Malibu in the battle of the “coco-rum” wars. The nose is surprisingly good. Really nice toasted coconut notes – like fresh Macaroons desiccated coconut and a slightly less sweet note of natural coconut water running over it all. It promises everything on the label. If you don’t like coconut – particularly in its natural fresh state then this isn’t for you. If you do then this does have a air of authenticity. Aluna Rum is a harmonious blend of coconut and pure rum, offering a refreshing, low-sugar spirit ideal for discerning palates seeking a lighter yet flavourful tropical libation. This enchanting spirit intertwines the subtle sweetness of toasted coconut with the crisp, clear notes of high-quality white rum, resulting in a sumptuously smooth and clean finish.
