About this deal

A group of researchers in China tried to find some scientific basis of this claimed property of lead sulfide (galena) relating to absorption of sun rays when applied into the eyes in the form of kohl. [23] The authors reported the ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectra of a thin film of lead sulfide prepared on "indium tin oxide" (ITO) substrate. The spectra showed that lead sulfide thin films had higher absorption and lower transmittance in the UV light band, which further increases with the increased deposition voltage. Thanks to the developments of chemical experiments and scientific research, in Middle Age Europe the methods of distillation became very well known. Although it is difficult to trace the exact first usage of the term ‘alcohol’ in relation to distilled drinks (and by extension, to eve ry other similar drink we know today), the most probable explanation is that the term ‘alcohol’ became very popular particularly among 14th century alchemists. During the dark periods of the Middle Age, the word assumed also a pejorative connotation due to the growing excessive usage of any distilled beverages. However, we must learn from history and not forget the true meaning suggested by the wise Egyptians: similarly to its origins, the term al-cohol has been largely employed also for curative and medicinal purposes, attesting its multiple functions and ways of consumption when properly regulated. Abdullah bin 'Umar Radiyallahu 'Anhu related the same hadith from Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallarn that: "Verily use the kuhl made from ithmid. It brightens the vision and strengthens the growth of the eye lashes".

One of the narrators in the chain of this hadith is Bishr bin Mufaddal RA. The 'ulama wrote that he performed four hundred rak'ahs nafl daily, and it was his permanent practice to fast every alternate day. Kreston, Rebecca (April 20, 2012). In addition, mothers would apply kohl to their infants' eyes soon after birth. Some did this to "strengthen the child's eyes", and others believed it could prevent the child from being cursed by the evil eye. [16] Jaabir bin 'Abdullah Radiyallahu 'Anhu says: "Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam said: 'Use the kuhl made from ithmid for the eyes. It brightens the vision and strengthens the growth of the eye lashes'.

Kohl, Kajal, Al-Kahal, Surma, Tiro, Tozali, or Kwalli: By Any Name, Beware of Lead Poisoning". Food and Drug Administration . Retrieved 2017-10-26. Traditional kohl has also been made at home: Ingredients like almonds or aloe vera may be burned using a clay lamp over which a clean plate (of bronze or copper, for example) traps the fumes. The soot that collects on the plate may be mixed with clarified butter or oil, creating kohl — and giving the material its creamy texture and sweet fragrance. This is how our grandmothers and great-grandmothers made cosmetic kajal, often keeping it in small brass bottles. Antimony occurs naturally in the environment. But it also enters the environment through several applications by humans. Antimony is an important metal in the world economy. Annual production is about 50.000 tonnes per year, with virgin materials coming mainly from china, Russia, Bolivia and South Africa. World reserves exceed 5 million tonnes. In Finland there is a deposit of elemental antimony. These sunnas are things that the Prophet regularly did, yet they are not symbolic of the religion itself and hence are “of additional blessing” (zawa’id). Examples are the way the Beloved Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) dressed, stood and sat. Ithmid (antimony) kohl is a case in point. As well as the major health benefits mentioned by the prophet, it also carries beauty benefits for the eyes. Some Indian Ayurvedic or ancient Indian herbal medicine manufacturing companies add camphor and other medicinal herbs that are beneficial for eyes in their kajal. It can serve not only as a cosmetic but also as medicine for the eyes.
