About this deal

Major physical or emotional upheavals can affect the success of potty training (Institute of Health Visiting, 2014). So try to time potty training for when things are calm and stable. What age should I start potty training my little one? Dress your child in clothes that are easy for them to get on and off, so they can take the lead with using the potty. Some children learn best when they can be at home and naked from the waist down. Other children learn best when they are wearing loose-fitting trousers without pants. You may both find the situation stressful, but staying calm and relaxed is the best attitude to help your child deal with the problem.

A potty (more than one ideally). Choose one that is low to the ground so your child can use it independently. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on anything fancy, it has to do one job well: catch wee and poo!

Avoid starting to wear pants when the child is about to change rooms at nursery – that will be a big enough upheaval for them. As soon as you see that your child knows when they're going to pee, encourage them to use their potty. If your child slips up, just mop it up and wait for next time. It takes a while for them to get the hang of it. Don't forget at this practice stage they can still wear a nappy, but it will boost their capabilities and awareness if they have some nappy free time and potty sits.

There are 40 different skills your baby needs to learn and put together to become potty trained. You don’t need to wait for them to be able to do all these skills on their own before you start helping prepare them. There is no reason why you can’t potty train out and about from the start. You will just need to prepare a few things for potty training on the go. For how to do this, see our article about potty training out and about. When to take a break from potty training? Soft runny poo can then leak round these lumps and bits of hard poo can break away into their underwear. Constipation is common in childhood, particularly when children are being potty trained at around 2 to 3 years old. Symptoms of constipation in childrenWhatever you decide, don't let it get you or your child down, and don't put pressure on them. Talk to other parents about how they coped. Make sure it’s a good time for you as well as your child. It’s best to avoid doing it at a time when there are any big changes or disruptions to your child’s or family’s routine. There are however lots of things you can do to gradually work towards night time dryness including:

Make sure your child is drinking enough during the day. Aim for 6-8 drinks a day. Water is the best drink but milk in moderation and well-diluted squash is OK too. They recognise when they have a wet or dirty nappy and may pull at it, take it off or ask you to change it.No! Many children and particularly those with additional needs, will never give any signs that they are ready to potty or toilet train. Talking about wee and poo when you change them and letting them see you use the toilet gives your child the message that it's a normal part of life and nothing to be afraid of. It is normal to have lots of accidents at the beginning and they are an important part of the learning process. This is a big step for your child, so be patient and encourage them. At this age, you will be taking her outside about 12 times a day. Toys are notorious for taking a little longer to housebreak. It might take more than 6-9 months to do. You never give up, and you don’t give her freedom until she can hold it for at least 4 hours, or you will have to start over again.
