About this deal

a b "Spirits & Wines: Martell takes a bold new direction". The Moodie Davitt Report. 2003-10-31 . Retrieved 2022-03-24. In the US, it is required to clarify the type of brandy, such as “apple brandy or fruit brandy,” and it must be aged in oak for more than two years; if not, it should be labeled “immature.” Martell Cognac has quite a royal history: it was served at the coronation of King George V of England, and at the gala dinner for the marriage between Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco.

Brandy is a spirit that demands attention: fragrant and elegant, smooth and rich, and dark and brooding all at the same time. Thought it was just a sweet drink suitable for drawing rooms and cigars? Think again.

Elegance, authenticity, savoir-faire

Martell is a cognac house founded in 1715 by Jean Martell. It is the oldest of the "big four" cognac houses (the others are Hennessy, Rémy Martin and Courvoisier), who together produce most of the world's cognac. [1] Formerly owned by the Seagram spirits empire, it is now part of the Martell Mumm Perrier-Jouët (MMPJ) subsidiary of the French wines and spirits conglomerate Pernod Ricard. [2] Martell's flagship Cordon Bleu, introduced in 1912, was for many years the world's highest-selling premium cognac. [2] A bottle of Martell Cordon Bleu can be seen in the opening scene of Apocalypse Now (1979), on the bedside table of Captain Willard (played by Martin Sheen). [18] See also [ edit ] VSOP: Very Superior Old Pale, or brandy that’s aged a minimum of four years. These brandies are known for being more mellow than previous categories thanks to their time spent in barrels. It’s a bottle that’s won competitions against some of the biggest names in brandy in the world, and is unrivaled for its delicious taste and strong characteristics. The brandy is aged for around 17 years, with the process taking place in Limousin oak barrels. Wood spices and red fruit are two of the immediate aromas noted, and a sip will reveal a rich and deep brandy filled with soft orchard fruit, vanilla, and hints of chocolate. Germain Robin makes 10 barrels a year of its XO alambic brandy and about 80 percent of the wine used for distillation is pinot noir – a premium grape that’s evident in this brandy’s taste.

The beauty of brandy lies in its aging process, making this element of its production arguably the most important. When we put together the shortlist for the best brandies and cognacs on the market, we kept each bottle’s age at the forefront of the decision-making process. In comparison to many other spirits, brandy doesn’t go off. An unopened bottle can keep indefinitely as long as it’s stored properly: a tightly sealed container, away from heat or light. By this logic, VS bottles of cognac tend to be a lighter amber when poured. XO bottles of cognac are very dark and smooth. This applies to all cognac producers, not just Martell. Martell specifically uses fine-grain oak wood, which gives their cognac a delicate woody flavor. Different lines produce cognac, and some of the most popular are Hennessy, Remy Martin, and Courvoisier.

The design of each bottle of Martell captures and conveys the history, elegance and savoir-faire of the oldest of the great cognac houses in France, from the blue ribbon and tradition-inspired label, to the telltale arch at the base. A unique aspect of Hennessy Cognac is that the responsibility for each and every eau-de-vie is not down to a single person. Instead, the house has a Tasting Committee. This group of eight people meets every morning at 11:00 to discuss and taste various Cognacs. In fact, they sample between 7,000-8,000 each and every year. Now, who wouldn’t want that job? Discover more about the intricate (and long) journey to becoming a member of the Hennessy Tasting Committee in our article, Cognac Expert’s Visit to Hennessy Cognac.

Courvoisier XO Cognac was judged to be one of the finest XO cognacs in the world and it’s easy to see why. It’s a bottle with many layers, thanks to the brand’s Master Distiller using a prime selection of beautifully matured eaux-de-vie, all aged from 11 to 25 years. Brandy is a distilled spirit made from fermented fruit, and while it is common to use grapes, you can use ripe pears, peaches, apples, and other fruits [ 4].Most wine-producing countries also make brandy, ranging from Greece’s Ouzo to Peru’s Pisco and Italy’s Grappa. Cognac is a type of brandy made from Saint Emilion grapes or Ugni Blanc, and by law, it should be distilled twice and matured for at least two years in a barrel. VS Cognac is the youngest brandy that only requires two years of maturation inside the casks before blending and bottling. It has a perfect harmony of elegant and powerful aromas as well as smooth and well-balanced tasting notes.

In 2006, Martell joined the Comité Colbert, an association that promotes French luxury houses on an international scale. Calvados: A type of apple brandy, also produced in France that’s either double or single-distilled and is aged in oak barrels. Hennessy was founded in 1765 by Irishman, Richard Hennessy, and his son James, and has been passed down through the generations. In 1971 Kilian Hennessy created the group Moet Hennessy in a merger with Champagne house, Moet et Chandon. In 1987 they then merged with the clothing brand, Louis Vuitton, to become LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy), and the largest such luxury goods group in the world. The Treaty of Paris recognizes the independence of the United States of America, and with it, 87 units of Martell were shipped to the USA.
