About this deal

Since I already knew what the story was about, I skipped the “General Sketches” she mentions, and went straight to figuring out the plot structure and character arc, as well as interviewing my characters. Her series finishes with writing out the structure for each scene, but I did this as I wrote the first draft. Rhona Marshall: The only classmate who is nice to Beauty but is unable to be her best friend as she already best friends with Skye though she wishes otherwise. Embarrassing First Name: Beauty regards her first name as this for most of the story. In the end, she doesn’t seem to mind it so much, after meeting a girl with an equally embarrassing first name: Princess. Together, they decide to form an Unusual Names Club. Dilly also considers her given name of Dilys as utterly ridiculous, assuming her mother “thought it sounded posh” and usually goes by Dilly.

Best friends, Ben and Janet are determined not to let Amy Lou Bonnerman become 4th grade class president, subjecting the whole school to a pony-themed carnival. But when they both decide to run against her, they become rivals!

The best thing about this book is that it is not just Beauty that grows as a character - her mother grows too. I feel that this is something of a rarity in children's literature and, as such, it was one of my favourite parts of the novel. It is never revealed if Gerry gets any particular punishment for his domestic abuse. However, the story does throw around the possibility that his new business deal will not go through, and that he will get arrested for bribery. Were you reflecting on your own experiences in exploring Cookie's identity as a British child with Bangladeshi roots?

This is actually more than just a cookbook of cookie recipes as there are also recipes for many other baked treats included and like the title suggests: brownies, bars, etc......which from my point of view is a win-win scenario. Gerry is a terrible father to Beauty, constantly putting her down and trying to control her. She's afraid of him and wishes she had a dad who loved and accepted her for who she is. All recipes were explained well with easily accessible ingredients and I enjoyed all the author's personal comments that preceded her recipes.Grew a Spine: Dilly initially submits to Gerry and tries to please him, but she eventually begins standing up for herself. Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Gerry is not an especially attractive man, described as squat, balding and pudgy. Dilly is much younger than him and is described as very beautiful; Gerry also tends to get her to wear revealing clothes and flashy jewellery to emphasize this more. Dilly even thinks that the main reason Gerry asked her out for drinks rather than firing her was because she was wearing a low-cut top when she had to report to him. This book is for… both those who seek the easy but enchanting and those in the mood for some extravaganza. Honorary Aunt: Avril is this to Beauty (she being Beauty's father's first ex-wife, who is on good terms with Beauty's mother). She refers to her as "Auntie Avril" and mentions she always buys her good birthday gifts. She also lets Beauty and Dilly stay at her house temporarily after they leave Gerry. Big Fancy House: The Cooksons' house. They live in a custom-built, six-bedroom house, with three bathrooms and a hot-tub. Beauty even has her own en-suite with taps shaped like dolphins. Gerry, of course, constantly shows it off to everyone who sets foot in it.
