About this deal

If you are just starting out you're unlikely going to see results immediately. Your hair must go through a transition period first - read more about that here. This can take up to a month. So patience is a critical factor when embarking on this journey. I’d love some advice, any advice on where I go from here with my hair. As it’s starting to drive me mad. If you’re not sure who the Curly Girl Method is best for, or if it work for your hair, I will say that type-3 curls tend to see the best results from CGM (again, make sure you know your hair type; it’ll make the jargon you read so much easier), though tons of people with 2c and 4a hair have also had amazing success. So it doesn’t mean you can’t experiment if you have straighter or coilier hair, but just know your mileage may vary.

As you can see, the curl community is a literal community—it kinda takes a village to figure out hair textures, and these are just a few of the zillion resources available out there. Right now during isolation, I’m giving my hair a break. I co-wash and condition but then I don’t add any additional products. I’m not going anywhere so… 🙂 My hair gets a breather but I’m still following the method. And what I am finding is that even in its natural state, my hair is curling so much more than it did 12 months ago. I could probably just co-wash, condition, plop with no products and apply 2 pumps of mousse and I’d be OK. Yes, the Curly Girl Method actually calls for two "shampoos ": (1) your one-time-only "reset" shampoo that's filled with harsh, stripping sulfates to clarify your hair, and (2) your regular sulfate-free cleanser that's super moisturizing and gentle. Note: Depending on your hair type, this cleanser might be a moisturizing shampoo, or a creamy conditioner that you use as a cleanser (whaa? Yes, keep reading). "Reset" shampooYou’d think that knowing how to treat your hair should come to you naturally, but depending on your hair type, this is not always the case.

For some curly hair types, the curly girl method can be a lifesaver! The method includes helpful tips that can transform your hair and help you better understand the way that curls and natural waves need to be cared for.

A final word

I’d recommend you do an ACV rinse or Lemonaid rinse at least once a month and in the beginning, maybe even once a week. Don’t – wait for it – brush or comb your hair. This is might sound ludicrous to some, but it makes perfect sense. By using a brush or comb, you’re pulling out your hair’s natural curl pattern, which is exactly what we want to avoid. If you feel you can’t live without one, opt for a Denman brush. Chances are, you’ve been shampooing, conditioning, towel and blow-drying, combing and brushing your hair for years and can hardly imagine a hair care routine that doesn’t involve these seemingly crucial elements. My hair is fine, but there’s lots of it, and it’s high porosity, despite the moisturising products I use. My mums is the same so I think it’s more hereditary than it is due to damage or colouring (I’ve never boxed dyed, it’s always done professionally and it’s not been bleached in over 10 years). Curly – When hair is completely dry, bend forward and fluff from underneath to create lift. Don’t touch the top layer to avoid frizz.

While curly hair can be unpredictable, following CGM can help you achieve more consistent results. Who can use the Curly Girl Method? Wavy– You may use regular shampoo, but only once a week. Always condition before & after using shampoo. After shampooing, flip your head over (bending at the waist), rake all your hair forward, then squish conditioner into the ends. Rinse your hair by squishing in palmfuls of water, then squish in palmfuls of gel. The water in your hair will help dilute and distribute the gel, while all the cupping and scrunching will encourage major curl or wave formation. So I started the curl girl method about 2 months ago and I’m still incredibly confused! The information that you have provided is amazing but the whole thing is still a mine field. Note: Some people with ultra-fine or wavy-curly hair get better results with mousse, but the vast majority of CGM-ers do well with gel)

The first thing I would recommend is to continue to do an ACV rinse on a weekly basis. Perhaps 2 or 3 weeks in a row. That’s what I have been doing lately as my curls were becoming a bit stringy and I think it has helped. Use natural ingredients such as coconut oil, shea butter, jojoba or olive oil to moisturize your curls. My issues are that my waves are just sort of flat, not really defined, there’s not much volume and it’s incredibly frizzy. I also tend to get an oily scalp the day after washing. It doesn’t have to be expensive to follow the Curly Girl Method and in my personal opinion, your goal should be to only use 2 or 3 products. Do not brush your hair except when wet and only with a wide-tooth comb or simply your fingers (this is what I do).

Hairsprays

When switching over to natural hair care, knowing how porous your hair is will make it easier for you to find the best product for your hair. There are different ways to test whether you have high or low porosity hair. Approved’ or ‘Curly Girl friendly’ simply means that these products do not contain any of the ‘bad’ ingredients listed by Lorraine Massey in her book, Curly Girl – The handbook and that they are completely safe to use. By double gelling I’m referring to the method of adding gel on soaking wet hair, then dry with a t-shirt or microfiber towel, and then add gel again. It’s all about unschooling yourself and letting go of the idea that we need non-water-soluble silicones, alcohol, heat and fragrance for our hair to look and feel its best.
