About this deal

In the book, they’re kind of described as sheer blue jumpsuits. And, again, when you’re writing, you know, you can visualize, and this is great. But I have to say, every actor that came in for the fitting, before they saw the costume was like, “Are we wearing sheer?” [ Laughs] It was everyone’s concern. Volunteer as tribute alongside a reaped Peeta and represent District 12 in our Adult Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen Costume. This suit was worn in the second Hunger Games film, 'Catching Fire' when Katniss Everdeen enters the Quarter Quell with the other districts victors in a tropical beach themed anniversary tournament.

Kurt:"I think so. Bart always references private school where you have all the same thing and people do little things to make themselves stand out, whether they are doing it intentionally or not. It can be subtle. When Katniss first meets President Coin it's important for them to be on the same level ground - they are wearing the same thing. But Katniss is a little more unbuttoned while Coin's top button is done up. It's those subtle differences which help define characters." On Lucy Gray's "granny boots": “What can I put her in, that’s going to allow her to crawl through these tunnels and scurry up walls and, and get around?” [Summerville] wondered. “I wanted to give her something that was really attractive, and had a little bit of sex appeal and glamour to it. She’s a bit of a cancan girl, but then also give her ankle support.” [10] For the 74th Hunger Games, the male and female tributes lived up to the name of their district with long light-blue outfits and luminous pearls which represent pearls in the sea, and had starfish on the shoulders. [1] Yes. I’d done this before — I designed the first Harry Potter — and you don’t want to disappoint the fans. Things change when you do a film, but you try the best — I try the best I can to be respectful of the material and the characters. I mean, it’s mostly about the characters, and even if you can’t do every detail that’s in a book, you want to get the essence of that character across.Alexander McQueen lent several pieces to the production. They were mostly worn by Effie; this included her butterfly dress from the reaping. [3] In an interview with MTV, costume illustrator and designer Christian Cordella said he worked on "pretty much everything from the fire dress to the Hunger Games suit." [5] This Friday, a little old movie called The Hunger Games (based on the first book from Suzanne Collins’s best-selling trilogy) hits theaters. Costume designer Judianna Makovsky had the task of re-creating the looks for the people of Panem, including the outrageous pink getup Elizabeth Banks wears as Effie Trinket, the uniforms worn by tributes as they fight to the death, and Jennifer Lawrence’s show-stopping “girl on fire” moment. Makovsky, who hadn’t even read the books before director Gary Ross offered her the gig, talks about becoming a fan, her connection to Lenny Kravitz, and whether she’s Team Peeta or Team Gale. https://web.archive.org/web/20150130152757/http://www.vogue.com/873551/dressing-the-hunger-games-costume-designer-judianna-makovsky

Effie, over time, gets a little more serious. She loses a little bit of her flightiness. Were you able to reflect that in her clothing as the movie progressed? However, in the book, Katniss Everdeen observed that both tributes from District 1 were spray-painted silver, in tasteful tunics glittering with jewels. [2] District 2 - Masonry [ ] Thank you. For me it was the perfect thing—in her character’s mind, it’s spring. There was the reaping, and kids are gonna be brought to slaughter. She’s thinking, It’s springtime! [ Laughs] You know? Covered in sparkly gold sequins and spectacular moon headpieces, the male and female tributes sported far-out costumes for the 74th Hunger Games. They were "flying to the moon." It also represented that it takes time to travel, and that some people used to use the moon for directions. [1] District 7 - Lumber [ ] The Academy uniform was unisex. Summerville explained: "With the Capitol, when they have you in a group setting—bootcamp or the Peacekeepers—you work for them. They look at you as one of a million. It’s a bit communistic and regimented." [10]

The District 10 male and female tributes had costumes that were glitzed up in golden fringe, and meant to represent cowboys and cowgirls from their district. [1] As of September 2023, numerous set pieces, props, and costumes are on display at The Hunger Games: The Exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada. From handcrafted designs to pieces by Alexander McQueen, Nicholas K, Tex Saverio and Juun J, the new Hunger Games film is an eye-popping fashion fantasy. The Hollywood Blog caught up with costume designer Trish Summerville to talk about the fashions she chose for Katniss, Peeta, and the competitors in the arena—plus, how she handled author Suzanne Collins’s frequent impulse to have characters appear nearly naked. The costumes of the male and female in the 74th Hunger Games represented folded origami paper. Their headpieces were sculpted to look like a professionally made origami. [1] However, Johanna Mason later stated that their stylist was the biggest idiot in the Capitol and had dressed the District 7 tributes as trees for the last forty years, contradicting the costumes used in the films. Bart:"That was the most interesting thing for us. These characters had been really established and to strip them down and break them from society was great for us. It was also interesting to think how we would create something for these characters' styles to come out of, even though they're in the same clothing. Eiffe is the best example of that. Each character took the same base clothing and made it their own." Was it important to show their personality coming through?

Is that something you took into account when you chose what they would be wearing, what the actors underneath were like? Lucy Gray Baird's rainbow dress was designed to match the book description and be functional in action sequences. Summerville went through a number of designs before she settled on one "made of tulle, netting, and fabric with plenty of stretch, that enabled [actress Rachel Zegler] and her stunt doubles to move freely." [10]

She’s so much fun to work with. She tells people that she was my Barbie doll. But she has a lot of good ideas, she knows how things should fit, and she wanted all her clothes to be very constricting — she has that funny walk [in the movie] because she can’t walk any other way. Her shoes are so outrageously high and uncomfortable, and she wanted that. I’m like, “Are you sure you can do the scene?” And she’s like, “Yes, I’ll do it. I’ll take them off in between shots. It’ll be fine.” She was miserable, but she did it because she felt it was right. In the book, the fashions are so outrageous in the Capitol that they aren’t meant to be actually worn. And that was the point: poking fun at fashion, and how outrageous trends can be. Summerville and director Francis Lawrence decided to base the early Capitol aesthetic on post-WWII Americana in the 1940s-50s. [10] The silver outfits sported by the male and female tributes in the 74th Hunger Games represented the intricate inner working of electronic devices. The silver mesh material was very shiny, and might have been meant to represent metal electronics. [1]
