Patchwork is a game for two players (and only two players) in which the players compete to create the highest-scoring quilt by placing tiles on their individual player board. Patchwork takes between 15 minutes and half an hour to play, and is suitable for newcomers to the hobby and younger players thanks to its simple rules, short length and colourful presentation. That said, it’s just a great game no matter who you are. Patchwork is a little gem. There are three things happening; building the button economy, managing time and the consequences of time, and manipulating which patchwork pieces are available. It is not really about the patchwork pieces or making a quilt, it is about managing an economy in a time efficient manner and competing to do so against an opponent.
Buttons are your currency in this game. Give each player 5 buttons to start and place the rest of the buttons and the 7x7 bonus tile to the side.

Patchwork is a game of Tetris without the speed stresses. It’s literally all about “knitting” a quilt from pieces of “patchwork”. Does it get any more granny-zen than that? (No offense, knitters!) The game finishes when both players reach the finish space on the time board. Keep on playing until you’re both there. Like most roll and writes, there are certain abilities players can utilise to best help them score and win. However, Patchwork Doodle doesn’t require you to earn them, you can just use each one once as you need to. You can slice a patch and use one half, choose a patch to the left or right of the currently chosen one, add a single square patch, or use any ability a second time. These are tremendously handy in a pinch, particularly when looking for the biggest rectangle and needing a specific shape to plug a gap. How It Handles The player then has to place the patch. It can be placed on the board in any way, as long as it does not overlap the edge of the board or another piece. Once they have placed their piece, the player then moves their time token the number of spaces shown on the patch. If your token would land on the same space as your opponent’s, place yours on top. If you decide to buy a patch, you must move the neutral token into the space of the patch you’re buying, pay the button price marked on the patch piece, move your time token the indicated number of spaces on the time board and place your patch on your quilt board. It’s important to note that once you place a patch, it can’t be moved for the rest of the game - so choose wisely. It’s a two-player game I’ve found great for whipping out on a relaxed evening in. There’s nothing too intense going on here. Patchwork works well if you aren’t in the mood to exercise your brain cells too much. If you’ve run out of buttons, you can get some more by advancing your time token forward on the central board. This replaces your go and means you can’t take any (more) patches.Set the game (time) board with the spiral facing up in the middle of the table, then place time tokens at the starting position. There is no real catch here: Patchwork is indeed a rather peaceful game for two. But it is quite challenging and exciting, even though what you are dealing with is just patches for a quilt. Actually, those patches deserve attention. They are colorful and just a pleasure to hold in your hands and a pleasure to add to your personal quilt that you may design to look the way you want it to look. There has, however, been a slight adjustment since Uwe first put patch to paper. Nothing that will send shivers down your spine, don’t worry. But those eagle-eyed players amongst you will spot a small but significant change. 14 out of the 33 in total have been adjusted so that cost v reward v quilt coverage is a little more in balance. This is not an in-your-face change, but our final positions have been considerably closer in Halloween than our previous games using either the original and Christmas versions. Now, this could be a coincidence, of course. But I would like to think that the efforts to rejig the gameplay have upped the challenge.
