About this deal

Mica platelets have a high level of transparency. White light will pass through the platelet—the titanium dioxide layer has a higher refraction index than the mica and the surrounding. Light is refracted and at the interfaces reflected in different angles. This phase shift creates so-called interference colors—the main characteristic of a pearlescent effect—. Iron oxide shows its typical color even in thin layers on a mica substrate. There are 7 main paint options for the 3008, comprising 4 metallic shades and 3 pearlescent finishes. We also outline the various interior upholsteries that go with these external hues. Paint Types So I’m going to explain Pearlescent Glaze is. So this is it, it’s quite white looking but in fact it’s translucent and in a way it’s very much affected by the colours that are underneath it. So if I paint it on to here a white paint underneath it looks white. If I paint it here on to different colours; that looks pinky, that looks yellowy; that looks blue. The idea is that it enhances that colours that are underneath it. And it’s got this beautiful, beautiful glaze to it, which does catch the light.

I’m mixing now the Pearlescent Glaze with some colours. And this for me is one of the most exciting things. So I just want to show you these: so that is a colour that I’ve made by using Florence; this is one I’ve made using Antibes Green; and this one using Aubusson Blue. So how you do it is…I’m going to have lots of glaze there! And now the key is to have just a tiny, tiny bit of colour. So I’m just going to… a little tiny bit on there and then mix that in. You see what a huge difference that makes? You’ve got to be careful that you don’t put too much in otherwise you’re going to obliterate the translucency of it. And then I can just paint that on there. Isn’t that beautiful? The Pearlescent Glaze looks white but is in fact translucent, meaning it is will change appearance according to the colour beneath it. Synthetic mica is regularly used in the cosmetics industry due to its purity. Most pearlescent pigments in cosmetics use synthetic mica to create intense and bold colors while allowing for a superior skin feel and outstanding chroma. Silver Pearlescent Solid paint is cheaper to produce and apply to a car when it is being built, and most manufacturers offer a limited selection of no-cost solid paint choices on a new model; options vary, but you may find a car has three solid paint options as standard (although some cars have only one free paint option), with red, white, blue and grey being common colours. This particle size distribution is tight enough to ensure a uniform oxide coating across all the particles, helping to boost the color intensity further. It also creates a D50 optimal for light reflection with minimal edge scattering. An example of this type of product would be Silver Pearlescent pigment. The larger distributions will appear glittery but provide the least coverage, while the small distributions will appear satin and have more coverage. You either love matte finishes or you don’t. If you do, you may well feel the extra expense and hassle is worth it. But don’t be surprised if your car turns out to be difficult to sell on. What’s special-finish car paint? The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport L’Or Blanc was a one-off car with a paint finish featuring fine layers of porcelain; it was not cheap Pearlescent/Mica = as above, only instead of metal, ceramic crystals (known as ‘mica’) are added to the paint. These not only reflect light but refract it too, giving one colour different appearances in different levels of light. They’re normally as expensive as or pricier than metallic paints. If none of the above floats your boat, various car manufacturers use a range of other techniques to give even more lustrous finishes in a seemingly infinite spectrum of colours. You pay for it, though, with special finishes often adding thousands of pounds to the cost of a car.

Dirt shows more obviously on metallic finishes than solids, so you may end up cleaning your car more often. Be careful, though, as the paint marks more easily. Use a proper car shampoo – washing up liquid contains abrasive salts – and make sure there’s no grit on the sponge. Over-zealous polishing causes swirl marks and car wash brushes can leave marks, too. But any marks can usually be carefully buffed out. One thing you might have noticed on here, particularly on here, is that the brush marks show. We’ve done that deliberately to show you the brush marks really, really show. Now if you don’t want it to do that, what you would do is apply it with a roller, so that’s what I’ve done there, so that has got stripes on it of the brush marks and that is done with a roller. And for smaller areas you might even do that so that’s a little stippling brush: I’ll put it on to there. You’d get some to there and then you can apply like that for sort of small areas. It also looks amazing on something like this. Going even further, most high-end car manufacturers can create any colour you like. If you want your car to match your goldfish, or you want an entirely new colour, they will gladly oblige. Having relieved you of several tens of thousands of pounds for the privilege. On detailed work where there is no glaze at all, what I would recommend is that you lacquer the piece first so you would lacquer it with either the Gloss Lacquer or the Matt Lacquer. I think the matt is nicer because you’ve got this lovely contrast between the matt and the shine of the Pearlescent Glaze. The process would be paint with your Chalk Paint™, apply your Matt Lacquer and then over that you would put your Pearlescent Glaze. Alternatively, you can finish by waxing it, which is no problem at all. It will actually matte it slightly. The other thing you can’t do is wax it and then put the pearl paint on top, because wax is obviously oily so you can’t do it the alternative way. But yes, more or less everything’s possible. In this tutorial, Annie Sloan will teach you everything you need to know to add an iridescent finish to your Chalk Paint™ project. Whether you’re working on a small decorative piece like a picture frame or something larger. As well as simply applying the glaze over your painted surface, you can learn how to mix Pearlescent Glaze with Chalk Paint™ to create your own unique opalescent colour. With its light-reflecting properties, this water-based glaze shimmers even when dry. Step by step guide to using Pearlescent Glaze I could do that with a roller. I could do that with a Stencil Brush. I’ll do the other colours here too. You will see how they’re all affected. So a bit of glaze, a little bit of Antibes Green… Isn’t that beautiful? So what I’m really saying, too, is that every colour you do is going to be a lot lighter. It’s not going to have the strength of that, so you’ve got to judge what you’re going to get.

There are various methods for achieving a matte finish: using a primer with a high epoxy content, a high PVC content in the paint itself, or a flattening agent in the lacquer. Whichever method is used, the paint absorbs more light than it reflects, producing a dull sheen with a certain texture to the colour that has an appeal. The ‘Colyn’ part of the fabric has a herringbone effect, which lifts the ambience, while the ‘leather’ is actually a man-made replica of cow hide. That should please the vegans. This is the standard interior on the more upmarket Allure and Allure Premium 3008s. Mistral Leather Effect With Mistral Alcantara When white light falls on a multi-layer pigment, some is reflected on the metal oxide-coated surface. Reflection produces a phase shift of half a wavelength. The rest of the light passes through the outer layer, and some of the light is again reflected at the surface of the mica. It emerges from the pigment parallel to the first reflected component but with a different phase relationship which depends on how much further it travels through the metal oxide coated layer. Particle Size Distribution—A characteristic composition of fine and coarse particles leading to the PSD curve.Titanium white coated micas produce luster and give a sense of depth due to reflection, transmission, and further reflection from many layers. A luster impression is observed since the eye collects light reflected from platelets at different layers and, therefore, a sense of depth. Step up from the Allure Premium to the GT and while the Mistral synthetic leather is retained, the Colyn cloth is replaced by Mistral Alcantara fabric. Alcantara is a tradename for a suede-like microfibre and it’s a desirable finish in modern cars. Bear in mind any crumbs of food you get on Alcantara almost immediately disintegrate into the fabric and are next to impossible to remove. We speak from bitter experience, here… Mistral Leather Effect With Greval Alcantara While conventional metallic pigments are planar flakes of an opaque reflective material, pearlescent and other effect pigments use a multi-layer structure to produce reflection, refraction, and optical interference. Pearlescent, or nacreous pigments, come from either natural sources, such as fish scales, or synthetic sources (i.e., metal oxide coated micas, bismuth oxychloride, basic lead carbonate, lead arsenate, etc.).
