The Philips OLED807 certainly has a lot of competition this year - but we’d say it has more than enough unique qualities to stand out from the crowd. You get Android TV as your smart software here, but note that it isn't Google TV – unlike Sony, Philips hasn't moved on yet. This is disappointing in terms of usability (Google TV is superior to Android TV for ease of use), but when it comes to how comprehensive the streaming support is there's little to criticise here.

The 6th Gen P5 AI also allows users to toggle between Eye Care, Dark Detail Optimization or Colour Temperature Optimization modes. The company's 2022 OLED TVs also get a new version of AI Auto Film Mode, which provides seven smart picture modes including Filmmaker Mode. Being able to deliver more native brightness means, too, that there’s a wider range of natural looking tones in the brightest parts of HDR images, as well as reducing the potential for clipping (lost shading) in peak light areas.The speakers are sensitive enough to bring forth lots of the detail that a good film mix might contain without anything sounding too shrill or harsh, and perhaps best of all, the bass drivers manage to churn out depths and volumes of bass most TVs can only dream about. There isn’t as much nimbleness and definition to this bass as you might get with a good soundbar or external subwoofer, but that’s hardly surprising. What is surprising is how the 55OLED907 manages to push out as much bass pressure as it does – particularly if you haven’t got the screen pushed right up to your wall – without succumbing to distortions, drop outs or cabinet ‘buzzing’. The Philips OLED707 has the same OLED panel, same 70W speaker system and same P5 AI processor as the flagship 807 (above). However, its Ambilight system is three-sided rather than four-sided. The set’s mid-range is wide and dynamic enough to deliver even dense action scenes with authority and conviction, easily avoiding the thin, hemmed in feel you get with big movie moments on so many TVs. The power and dynamic range that delivers this impressive mid-range performance also contributes to excellent detailing; a nicely projected sound stage that seems to exist well beyond the edges of the screen; and convincing, clear vocals. There are various panel technologies. Each has its own specific features - viewing angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast, production cost, etc. The image quality depends directly on the type of the display panel used.

The 55OLED907’s single-chip processor actually yields a key gaming advantage over the dual-chip one found in Philips’ OLED937 flagship TVs, in that provided you set its picture preset to HDR Monitor rather than HDR Game, the TV will play 4K/120Hz sources in their full resolution, rather than showing them with a halved vertical resolution as happens with the OLED937. Featuring advanced Ambient Intelligence, the latest P5 processor monitors light levels in the room and adjusts the TV’s brightness, gamma and colour, in real time, to optimise the image. The processor also offers Eye Care, Dark Detail Optimisation and Colour Temperature Optimisation modes, for a bespoke viewing experience.The 55OLED807 is quite similar to competing TVs from alternative brands in many ways – so I may as well start with the feature that puts the Philips out on its own: Ambilight. As ever with an OLED TV, every pixel in the OLED807’s screen can produce its own light, delivering massive local contrast benefits over even the best LCD TVs. The OLED panel in the OLED807, though, builds on this by being one of the latest so-called OLED EX displays, meaning that it has the potential to produce as much as 30% more brightness than many previous OLED TVs. If Philips' flagship OLED turns out to be out of your budget, this high-end MiniLED TV could be a tempting trade-off between performance and price. Ask them to follow the on-screen hues and they create a coloured glow around the edges of the screen on the wall behind it – it makes the image seem larger than it already is, and also reduces eye-strain.
