Sometimes it isn't possible to tap a hole because the material is too thin (like sheet metal), or you don't have rear access to install a nut. But you may need to disassemble the device later, so blind rivets won't work. That's one instance where tapping screws are ideal. Length: The length of the screw should be sufficient to penetrate the fixture and the base material while leaving enough thread engagement for a secure hold. Breaking Screws: Ensure you are using the right size and type of screw for the application and that you're not over-tightening. The advantage of self-tapping screws for aluminium is that they don't need pre-drilling and are easily removed without damaging the metal. They can also be reused in the same material. When choosing the thread, consider the density of the timber. It’s best to use fine threads for hard timber and coarse threads for soft timber.
