Once you dig deeper beyond the cathedral and exploring the old town there are so many things to see and do, you will fall in love with Basel too. I’ve always associated Switzerland with winter travel or suits on business trips but as soon as the temperature allows, Basel is all about bathing, barbecues and buvettes. In this city centre a swimsuit is the typical summer outfit. The world’s largest contemporary art fair has been held since 1970 in the city but has expanded over the years to include annual stagings in Miami Beach (since 2022) and Hong Kong (2013), garnering a global reputation for the prestigious forum. Designed to spotlight the top artists of the time and provide a platform for them to sell their works, which can range from paintings to digital art and full-fledged installations, the fair is the city’s signature event and the foundation of Basel’s reputation as a city of art and cultural capital in Europe. At this year’s event in September, 33 countries were represented in 272 galleries; next year, the fair is scheduled for June 16 to 19. Something that kept us going during the last one and a half years was our strong willingness to get together with our destination (Basel) and never to disappear from the landscape,” said Switzerland Tourism director Martin Nydegger, adding that hosting Canadian travel agents was a great way to emphasize that resilience and to declare “We’re ready to go” when travel began its first tentative steps towards recovery.

The Sports Department of Basel-Stadt organizes an accompanied swim in the Rhine every Tuesday during the summer months of July and August. What I like about this is the fact that you’re accompanied by trained guards and it is a recurring event. You can find all the info here. Image Source: https://slrg-basel.ch/basler-rheinschwimmen/ 2. For many, “the most special moment” in Basel is Carnival, a centuries-old annual festival so ingrained in the consciousness and identity of the city that it has earned recognition on UNESCO’s intangible cultural list. Our Air Canada Race team was invited to watch school kids practice their drumming and fifing chops at practice, months ahead of the Feb.-March festival. Delightfully teetering between organization and chaos, costumed revellers “go wild” for three days – it always begins the Monday after Ash Wednesday – though Carnival is a decidedly family-friendly amalgamation of parades, music, and food. After being cancelled for the past two years, Carnival is set to return March 7-9, pandemic permitting. Water sports of all kinds as well as bathing and swimming in the vicinity of the hydroelectric plant are forbidden. Sudden changes in the water level give rise to potentially fatal currents. In the sultry, parle Italiano canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland, it’s the lakes that get all the love. But dip into Ticino ’s hidden valleys, and you’ll lose the crowds and find the region’s true pulse. Here glassy, jewel-colored rivers float past chestnut woods and incredibly pretty granite hamlets cresting hilltops (including Switzerland’s smallest, Corippo , with a population of just 15).

Basel has much to offer. I’ve lived there a number of years and still haven’t explored all its nooks and crannies. The museums alone would take quite awhile. Im still tryin to wrap this round my brain," one user joked. "Why hasn't the world found this out before?" Nydegger noted that Canadians and international tourists know Switzerland for its nature and mountains, but also an incredible diversity that includes its “boutique” cities such as Basel – a “hidden gem” that isn’t as well known as Zurich or Geneva, despite its international reputation as a City of Art. Basel has a very popular Christmas Market which seems to be on everyone’s “things to do in Basel” list. It also hosts the world’s largest art fair. When we were there in August, an open-air cinema was set up on Münsterhügel (Minster Hill) in front of Basel Minster, a former Catholiccathedral that is now a ReformedProtestantchurch.

Detour : Break up sightseeing with a wild swim in the Aare River. When the weather warms, join the Berner for a cooling downstream float. 10. Ski or hike below the Matterhorn To be honest, when Air Canada hosted its famed almost-annual travel agent “Race” early this fall, the airline could have sent participants by camel train to Timbuktu and they would have been thrilled, such was the enthusiasm by most for their first trip since the pandemic began. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case and instead, Air Canada selected beautiful, bountiful Basel, Switzerland, for its gala event. No country nails rail travel like the Swiss, where little red trains (polished and perfectly on time) chug from valley to peak with ease, leaving you to swoon over the Alpine scenery from the comfort of your panoramic carriage. Evoking a golden age of travel, Switzerland’s train journeys are hands down some of the world’s finest. Planning tip : Lucerne makes an appealing base for exploring the lake, with its Old Town, medieval wooden bridge and promenade strung along the lakeshore. 6. Take the Eiger Express to Jungfraujoch You can drive the meandering roads that loop around 40km (25 miles) of shore or take the Lavaux Panoramic Train , but you’ll get a better feel for the Lavaux by heading out on foot. Little trails dip into the vines everywhere, but top billing goes to the 11km (6.8-mile) trail from St-Saphorin to Lutry, where you’ll take in stirring views, pretty villages and welcoming cellars.

Planning tip : If you want to save a few francs, regularly scheduled services plying the same route can be just as enjoyable and significantly less expensive. Break up the journey by using cheaper SBB trains and overnighting along the way. 4. Hike in the Swiss National Park Basel may have a rich history, but it has embraced contemporary art with vigor. A great way to find hidden art in Basel is to take an Urban Art Tour with Artstübli Basel. At the point where Switzerland, Germany and France converge in the north, Basel dives into creative waters when it comes to avant-garde art and architecture, with a raft of galleries right up there with Europe’s best. But this city also likes to let its mind drift. There is plenty of room, with large red buoys marking the swimming area off from that used by boats. The adventure is just over 2km of downstream floating and I had a stupid grin on my face the whole way. Floating down a fast-flowing city centre river goes against all the “rules” we like to outline to swimmers in the UK: like knowing your exit point, and urban areas being often unclean, unsafe. But this was the perfect way to see the sights. Planning tip : For a great primer on Lavaux wines, stop off at Vinorama in Rivaz. Housed in a strikingly revamped bunker, the lakefront center speeds you through the wine-growing process, and you can sample dozens of different wines in the Espace Dégustation. Selina explained that the current is usually faster and water level higher than in this hot summer week, so what I had experienced was tame. I spent the afternoon with Selina both of us just in swimwear, not thinking twice about the fact we were walking around the city clad like this. Along the embankment on the Kleinbasel side of the river there are plenty of places to get into and out of the water.
