About this deal

Théoden, both mounted and dismounted, have the option of helmeted and non-helmeted. We opted for helmeted in our build because no-one likes to take an unarmored blow to the head. The Witch-king can be built as either the Witch King Angmar or a Nazgul rider with a different Fell Beast head. The Scenario Book details the Witch-king in the forces for the Battle of Pelennor Fields, so we of course built that option. The Mordor Troll has several head, armament, and accessory options available. We built ours slightly different from the one listed in the Scenario's book. We still gave him the hand-and-a-half hammer, but we also gave him an Isengard Troll Shield, and rather than the torso armor, we opted for the severed heads because they add some great detail to the troll. WITNESS THE MIGHT OF GALADRIEL—Piece together these 6 Scene Cards to witness the full potential of an ancient queen and her Elven Ring of Power—all shall love Galadriel and despair! The Witch King on Fell Beast. This is another multi-part, multi-variant kit. The Fell Beast has two heads which help alter the look if you get two. You also have the Witch King as seen in the movies at the Battle of Pelennor Fields with a flaming sword, or a generic Nazgul. It would be quite the battle featuring more than one of these monsters but the option is there! Arguably the greatest warrior that resides in Rivendell, Glorfindel’s skill and swiftness with a blade was unmatched by any Elf in the Third Age, including Lord Elrond. Even the dreaded Nazgûl recoiled from the mighty Elf lord and dared not face him openly.

PUT YOUR ART ON FULL DISPLAY—While each Scene Card is a playable Magic card, this box also contains 6 Art Cards featuring the same art without any game text obscuring the view, allowing you to appreciate the full scene in all its glory on the included display easel COLLECT ALL 4 SCENES—This bundle includes all 4 The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Scene Boxes, with 1 Aragorn at Helm’s Deep, 1 Flight of the Witch-king, 1 The Might of Galadriel, and 1 Gandalf in Pelennor Fields Riders of Rohan: horse-masters beyond compare, renowned for their great skill and bravery. 4 are armed with spear and shield, 4 with bows, 2 with swords and shields, and 2 with axes and shields; The list of cards will start at the top left corner of the scene and move from left to right to the bottom right card. Mount Doom This scenario is about learning how heroes and monsters work, and how they interact. The Mordor Troll goes in the centre of the board, Faramir and 6 Rangers are set up within 12”. The other models in the scenario (which are most of the rest of the contents of the box) are set aside and players roll a dice to bring on that many models from their force as reinforcements each turn. The accessories. You get a scenario book, dice, bases, tokens, and range rulers. The scenario book gives you a series of scalable scenarios so you can play bigger games, from just a few models, to every model in the box! I doubt the range rulers will see much use, but they do allow you to have everything you need to play in the box. The tokens are nice and sturdy and will stand up to repeated game play.

This is the first scenario where a hero is introduced, and a good follow up to the first one, as Damrod is a minor hero and not going to heavily tip the game, but introduces Might and Heroic actions as a concept to the players. Each weapon in the set has a different size… with some of them especially appropriate. Sting is 4″, which is how far Hobbits can move, while Gimli’s axe is 5″ long (the typical move for a Dwarf). Even Gandalf’s staff is 12″ long, which just so happens to be the range of most Magical Powers. Victory conditions are a straight Faramir vs Troll, two fancy models enter, one fancy model leaves. Neither side knew that Aragorn and the Grey Company, with the help of the Army of the Dead, had vanquished the fleet of the Corsairs in the Battle of Pelargir. The Army of the Dead repaid their debt to Isildur by driving the Corsairs upon the ships mad, causing them to jump overboard and drown. After loading the ships with as many men of southern Gondor as possible, they sailed north to the battle. Upon arriving, the enemy found itself in a disadvantageous position, with their enemies where (and when) they least expected. The extra reinforcements brought by Aragorn punched a wide salient within the most vulnerable area of the Mordor-host, severing the forces nearer to Minas Tirith and the ones close to the river Anduin.Fowler: I’ve found Thundercloud’s Going Beyond the Battlehosts article to be very helpful for a neophyte, especially as there is some faction overlap there! Personally, I opted for a Mordor Battleforce, Morannon command blister, and a Fell Beast – to really dive into the battle the box is named after! Complete beginners may be put off by the price, meanwhile, but if your budget can stretch that far, there's no denying the amount of value you're getting. What's more, the onboarding is better than most board games for adults of this kind. It's as good an entry point as you're likely to get. Sauron Defeated, the fourth volume of The History of The Lord of the Rings, contains superseded versions of the battle. Some changes of detail are apparent: e.g. Théoden slain by a projectile to the heart instead of being crushed by his horse; or when Éowyn reveals her sex, her hair has been cut short, a detail absent from the final version. J.R.R. Tolkien had also considered having Éowyn die. If you are playing ME:SBG for the first time then this is the scenario to start with to learn the structure of the turn and the mechanics for fighting and damaging models. The two books included with the Battle of Pelennor Fields Box are the Lord of the Rings Battle of Pelennor Fields Scenarios and Profiles book and the full Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Rules Manual. These two books include everything you need to play with the miniatures in the box and the rules for all games beyond them. If you wish to add more miniatures to your armies though, the profiles for all of the other available miniatures are going to be published in two army books, the Armies of the Lord of the Rings and the Armies of the Hobbit. Both of those books will include army lists from forces used in the movies, as well as profiles for all the miniatures from those films and narrative play scenarios.

As the sun begins to rise upon the fields of Pelennor, the great siege of Minas Tirith is all but lost… Yet hope has not faded and help is close at hand. Through the crisp morning air, the sound of horns can be heard ringing out, signalling the arrival of King Théoden and the Riders of Rohan. With the hosts of Mordor arrayed in their thousands, Théoden gives an impassioned speech and leads his men into the fray, riding for ruin and the world’s ending! The What Next adds almost everything left in the box, and turns it into a major engagement, with the second one recommending additional miniatures (Osgiliath veterans for Gondor and another hero for the orcs). It's a very simple system when you come down to it; each turn has clearly-defined steps, and the act of crossing swords is down to rolling D6 dice and comparing scores on an easy-to-read table. You don't need to worry about complex modifiers here, and even when 'Heroic' actions get thrown into the mix, they simply build on what's already there rather than making you juggle something more strenuous. The sprue for King Theoden. This is a nice sprue and gives you options to use a helmeted head or bareheaded.Since Middle Earth Strategy Battle has essentially replaced Warhammer as Games Workshop’s primary large-scale fantasy miniatures game, it shares some rules that will be familiar to players moving over from the now archived Warhammer universe. Rules such as what level of hero can lead a warband of soldiers, for example, or how combat is resolved, will feel immediately familiar. With that said, the cumbersome nature of Warhammer ’s rank and file combat is long gone; replaced instead by freeform duelling that allows units to outnumber opponents and support each other very simply.

The Dark Host was lost all but completely. Few ever made it to Mordor, and fewer still survived of the Haradrim forces. However, they only represented a fraction of the forces of the Dark Lord. Most important to Sauron was the loss of his mightiest servant, the Witch-king. Although the numbers lost were not incredibly significant to Sauron, as he could afford to lose many times that of his enemies, the loss of his chief servant was a devastating blow.
