About this deal

The main thing I'm missing from this book, is the ''make'' part. This gave the idea that it would contain patterns and ways to make your own clothes, but other than the basics of how to care for fabrics and put them together to make something, there's nothing about making in this book. No patterns or things like that, which was a disappointment. Although I understand how including that in a book aimed at people with little sewing experience might seem overwhelming to them. Ellis, Emma Grey (21 February 2020). "Companies Are Stealing Influencers' Faces". Wired. ISSN 1059-1028. Archived from the original on 22 November 2020 . Retrieved 29 November 2020. The Christmas video has really thrown me! How can anyone, in this day and age claim to know nothing of Christmas and all it’s traditions?? I used to really enjoy her posts and her obvious talent, but to claim she has no knowledge when it is quite easy to google and find that she has a very privileged upbringing with her parents having an article in the New York Times boasting about the size of their closet and how most New York apartments would fit into said closet! Mother is successful real estate business owner and father a builder. Sister is also very successful with high powered job in NY! It is unfortunate that she has chosen to ‘act’ in this way as I can now only view her as a historical interpreter, not dissimilar to the Mrs Crocomb that she often raves about! Same goes for BB's expert knowledge. Compared to a random person on the street with zero sewing/history knowledge she's an expert, that's what they call her. The same thing is happening to Rachel when people get irritated that she calls herself a beginner when she has plenty sewing projects under her belt. But in reality she is (no shade on Rachel, love her regardless). Learn the Historically Proven Stitches Every Seamster Needs with Beloved Historical Fashion YouTuber Bernadette Banner

What I can say about this book, is there for just from my own POV. I have very little experience with sewing, but I've always found it a relaxing thing to do - I embroider and cross stitch - and have been wanting to branch into sewing for a while now. Mainly to make a quilt, but now I also have some ideas as to how to modify some of the clothes I don't use often but deeply love. There was also a lot of space on creating eyelets for a garment that looked like a corset, and then all the illustrations for lacing a corset-like garment showed metal grommets instead of the eyelets. Shouldn't the laced eyelets be shown in some recognizable garment where they made sense, such as a loose blouse or dress where they were more decorative than functional? In fact, why include so much detail for a corset, which is not something the majority of people today are wearing or would ever wear? The corset belongs in a book dedicated to making and/or preserving historical dress. Had the corset been left out, there would have been space for showing how to take the fashions that you might have in your closet and actually refashion them to make them stronger, not so ephemeral. Or there could have been a section on just how to make a pattern from a garment that one really likes but that is not made well or of lasting material, and how to create a lasting version of such a garment. totally agree with the ‘feigned ignorance’ vibe, it’s definitely wearing thin for me too. A good counterpoint to this is Rachel Maksy, who is super into vintage, yet completely aware of the current internet and memes, and is not afraid to include those out of concern for ruining the aesthetic Her comment sections are flooded by people curious about these things. I have rarely seen so many questions about someone’s lifestyle. She has the info, she just... wants to re-invent the wheel and do it her way?? I don't know anymore. She used to be about trying out the historical techniques. This is from someone that wrote a sewing manual... I don't know.

I just opened YT to see that Bernadette has a new video on redesigning HR book covers. I haven't really watched her in at least a year, but I remember having a discussion about her doing this before. Afawk, she's not an HR reader and likely not hip on knowledge about the history of book covers and trends over the past 30 years. The old machines are nearly indestructible. Why not have a go and see how they can be adjusted and video a fun exploration of how machines barely changed for nearly a century (handcranks still available in the 1970s). I was so worried when I got my first old machine, until I realised people literally dig them up from their gardens and get them working again. There are MILLIONS around the world. Its not that precious!!! I mean that is so pithy (is that the right word) to take down those sewing videos, hoping her skillshare class would sell better. That is just cheap. Someone here mentioned that she liked Ren fairs and her Moiraine cosplay would fit right in. But are there Ren fairs in the UK? From what I heard it's an American thing (I certainly wasn't familiar with the concept pre-YouTube, it's not a thing in my country). Kind of sad if she isn't be able to actually wear the dress.I don't see how that says anything about her. If she didn't read the books, she likely doesn't know anything about the changes. Frankly, I think just enjoying a show is a petty reason to criticize her. I couldn't get through the A Song of Ice and Fire books but I loved Game of Thrones and didn't hate the last season. It happens. On her channel, Banner is an active spokesperson against the fast fashion industry, highlighting its environmental devastation and poor labor practices as reason for people to do what they can to abstain from buying clothes from such brands. In place of consuming fast fashion products, Banner has described her own move towards limiting her number of wardrobe pieces to sustainable and long-lasting garments, many of which she has created herself. [12] Once again, if you see an insta story, don't just talk about it, screenshot it and share it please for archival purpose so we can share with others. they're only up 24 hours.
