When mixing your dough, it may seem like it is going to be a bit dry, once you’ve added the flour. Don’t worry! Once you get your hands in to help mix, the warmth from your hands will help the butter/margarine soften more and help bring everything together. And finally, there’s a job that everyone will enjoy – decorating the gingerbread men! Whether your’re using icing writers or homemade icing, or just adding smartie buttons, this is a fun job to do together at Christmas time.

If you have icing writers they’re a simple way of adding mouths, eyes etc, otherwise mix around 1/2 a cup of icing sugar with a teaspoon or so of water and mix it together. You want it to be runny enough that you can pipe it, but not so runny that it won’t hold it’s shape on the cookie.

In the film The Brothers Grimm, a nightmarish twist on the Gingerbread Man appears. A young child is splashed with mud and the mud steals the child's eyes, nose and mouth. It then forms a small mud body with the child's stolen features for a face. The creature grabs the child and absorbs her into itself. It runs off yelling, "You can't catch me; I'm the Gingerbread Man!" In our house it’s always a choice between mince pies or these gingerbread men. This will stop your gingerbread people from spreading too much in the oven. Just 20 minutes in the fridge should do the job.
