Miyake was born in Hiroshima in 1938, and was a witness and survivor of the atomic bombing of the city during World War II. Another move to New York brought the opportunity to design ready-to-wear for Geoffrey Beene. Miyake returned to Tokyo in 1970, founded the Miyake Design Studio and began producing women's fashions.
