About this deal

The pedal uses mosfet transistors as diodes for clipping, one in series with a normal diode, usually germanium, to clip asymmetrically. My casual guess is that the clipping section is around D2." This is a knob tweaker's delight. If you demand versatility out of your dirt pedals, you'll enjoy the Santa Ana. It has a 3-band EQ (BASS MIDDLE & TREBLE) and a PRES(ENCE) knob to sculpt your sound. Going a step further it has two voicings - to quote the manual A "works well with a classic Fender clean amp" and B with a bassier amp.

ProCo Rat 2– Like the Joyo Ultimate Drive, tons of gain but no mid-punch. Tone on the cold/sterile side. Old-fashioned design. I also modified this pedal (specifically the Harley Benton Ultimate Drive). In addition to the well-known modification of the turns of the MOSFET transistors, I also changed the input capacitor to the MOSFET buffer C1 = 1 uF -> 10 nF for a better high-pass filter. Next, I increased the resistor from virtual ground to opamp R5 = 470k -> 1M for higher Zin. I replaced TL082 with RC4558 for better filtering. Despite its status as one of the all-time great overdrives, the OCD has not attracted nearly as many copies / clones / alternatives as many of the other pedal types. There's lots of arguments as to which is the absolute 'BEST' sounding OCD in and of itself as the V2 was just launched last year, and V1 went through 7 iterations - of which I have the last V1.7 one which I really like. So even on the OCD front there are a variety of essentially different sounding pedals. In this clipping arrangement, the body diodes dominate. The circuit would require another diode to be "soft clipping". The way that has been suggested as a fix (reversing the diode) gives you diode in series with a body diode, so about 1.2v, in parallel with the other transistor's mosfet function, making it irrelevant. It gives you one diode drop in one direction and two in the other.Right up up there with the notoriety of the Klon Centaur and the Tube Screamer is the Paul Cochrane Timmy Transparent Overdrive. Paul Cochrane builds these by hand, and despite the reasonable price tag the waiting list to get one can be quite long. If you're not one for waiting there are plenty on the used market. The BOSS Blues Driver BD-2 integrated perfectly with my setup. At last, I had the amount of sustain I wanted, but also enough mids to be able to punch through. OK, the BOSS Blues Driver BD-2 isn’t as middy as the Joyo Ultimate Drive or the Electro-Harmonix East River Drive, but it’s enough. Boosting it worked out great too as I now had the spare headroom in the mids for the Danelectro Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive V2 to work its magic and give a lift for leads. In a nutshell, the BOSS Blues-driver BD-2 is voiced perfectly for my needs. Not too gainy, not too middy, but with enough mids to cut. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je6CVLt_CSw Video can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Harley Benton – Ultimate Drive (OCD) (Joyo) – Test (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je6CVLt_CSw) Why did I put the Joyo Ultimate Drive on my pedalboard? This is not a modern, high-gain sort of pedal. This is more of a vintage tube sounding boost that responds to your playing dynamics, and can provide extra bite no matter what genre you’re playing. Dig into your strings harder, and you’ll hear its character come through, depending on where you’ve set the Drive knob. Speaking of dials, you get three of them: Drive, Tone, and Level. Getting the hang of the Tube Screamer’s operation could not be simpler.

For a more interesting function of the switch, I soldered a 4.7nF// R13 = 33k capacitor that affects the switch in the "LOW" position. Significantly boosts the frequency band from 1 kHz up (completely adds more of all mids). The overdrive pedal party is not quite complete without Boss in the mix, and the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive is one that should never be overlooked. After all, this is the company behind the storied OD-1, which in 1977 was the first overdrive pedal on the market. The clipping waveform distortion on the OCD is delivered by two 2N7000 transistors after the first stage, with the Drive control determining how much the signal is amplified before it hits this point. The JOYO JF-02 Ultimate Drive, as the name suggests, is a very versatile gain pedal effect. It has three control knobs, and the impact it gives you depends on the setting of the channel switch.Peter Frampton praises his Fulltone OCD in his Rig Rundown video: "But also, I love the Fulltone OCD, which is always in here, too." Is the tone lost in translation through an approximation of a pedal approximating an amp? In all honesty, it’s impossible to tell. What we can go by is the common thread in the tones we’re aiming for: fat, smooth sounding overdrive that the players mentioned above deliver in spades. To bring you the best overdrives out there, we keep current and extensively research new products. We periodically review and revise this list as new pedals are released.
