The Town lies north-east of junction 26 ( Waltham Abbey, Loughton A121) of the M25 motorway and south-west of junction 7 ( Harlow) of the M11 motorway. The forest is approximately 19 kilometres (12mi) long in the north–south direction, but no more than 4 kilometres (2.5mi) from east to west at its widest point, and in most places considerably narrower. The main body of the forest stretches from Epping in the north, to Chingford on the edge of the London built-up area. South of Chingford the forest narrows, and forms a green corridor that extends deep into East London, as far as Forest Gate. The southern part of the forest was always narrower but enclosure and other destruction in the 19th and 20th centuries mean that this is now more pronounced. The southernmost point of the Forest is now Wanstead Flats but it formerly extended slightly further south, to the Romford Road.
