About this deal

THE STUNNING SECOND WORLD WAR THRILLER FROM THE CELEBRATED SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR SIMON SCARROW – COMING MARCH 2021. When a young woman is murdered, Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke is under pressure to solve the case, swiftly. Distrusted by his superiors for his failure to join the Nazi Party, Schenke walks a perilous line – for disloyalty is a death sentence. There’s a reason Schenke has been selected – he’s not a member of the Nazi Party and is only tolerated for his glamorous past racing cars, an illustrious career that ended in a crash. If this case should uncover demons, then Schenke will make the perfect scapegoat. Then, as the nights draw even darker, another woman is murdered and the pressure on Schenke mounts. PLAYING WITH DEATH

Simon Scarrow is a popular novelist from the United Kingdom, who is best known for his novels based on the Historical Fiction genre. Till date, he has written a total of 5 novel series’ and the most notable novel series written by him is the Eagle Series. A dreadful crash has left him with injuries making him unsuitable for military service and a victim to dreadful replay nightmares. But the independent-minded Schenke, who has dropped the ‘Von’ symbol of rank from his name, has made a successful career in the Kriminalpolizei, the investigative arm of the German police force. Unable to choose between the comfort of home and the glamour of an illicit liaison, Dorner wants it all. But keeping secrets might lead to betrayal for this powerful intelligence officer . . .As his childhood was spent in traveling from place to place because of his parents, he got the time to finally write something worthy only after his graduation. Firstly, he pursued his love for history by becoming a teacher and then went on to become a full time writer from 2005 onwards. The author has managed to create a story that has a harrowing reality to it and he has dealt with the subject sensitively whilst also highlighting the abhorrent practices of the Nazi party in their quest for the perfect race. The two seemingly separate investigations are brought together seamlessly and along with Schenke you can’t help but feel for the men who have taken matters into their own hands to bring the guilty to justice even when you know that it will not end well for them either. A very strong first installment of historic drama in WW2 Berlin, that is certainly very well written and captures the madness of those early days of a coming storm and how people go about their business but also about the influence of the Nazi thinking. I've been reading Simon Scarrow for a number of years and a good number of books. His Cato and Macro series is very enjoyable and well respected for being an original take on army life and adventures during the Roman era. Cato and Macro are believable characters whose adventures have entertained me for many an hour.

The author, Simon Scarrow, is better known for his series of novels of the Roman Empire, but he manages to depict life in wartime Berlin with ease and Horst Schenke is a sympathetic character who one reviewer has compared to the late Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther. A exciting crime thriller set in 1939 Berlin. Shortly before Christmas a woman is found raped and murdered next to a city railway line. The victim is a former film star with connections to Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda for the Nazi party.

Publication Order of Short Stories/Novellas

Like many of Berlin’s fashionable ‘bright young things’, Karin Canaris is attracted to dangerous ideas. Despite Schenke’s deepening affection for her, he cannot help but wonder if Karin’s youth and privilege mean she does not understand the terrible possible consequences of her actions. Schenke’s feelings for Ruth become more apparent in this book and it is a difficult situation and a danger for both of them.
