Many cases of dry eyes are easily remedied with a basic over-the-counter eye drop (formulated for dry eyes). However, severe dry eyes or dry eyes that don't feel better after using OTC drops call for more serious intervention. Eye drops like Restasis work by suppressing the immune response, therefore reducing inflammation in the eye’s tear ducts. They can provide significant relief, but it can take several weeks or months for the effect to become noticeable. Usually, drops may be used as often as needed. Ointments are usually used 1 to 2 times daily as needed. If using an ointment once a day, it may be best to use it at bedtime.
