About this deal

In the next novel, "The Flavor of Vengeance" he tells a classic story of revenge but with a decidedly unpleasant and hard to digest protagonist. Then "The Heroes" arrives and the applause starts again. Wetterlant tried to run faster but he was so tired. Lungs burning, heart burning, breath whooping, the land jerking and see-sawing wildly with every step, the glittering hint of the shallows getting gradually closer, the thunder of hooves behind him&emdash;

His wonderful Sixth Regiment, his life’s work, built out of copious polish, and rigorous drill, and unflinching discipline, utterly shattered in a few insane moments. If any survived it would be those who had chosen to run first. The rawest recruits and most craven cowards. And he was one of them. His first instinct was to ask Major Culfer for his opinion. He almost opened his mouth to do it, then realised the man had been butchered by a lunatic with a metal eye. General Jalenhorm – an old friend of the king, promoted beyond his ability, brave yet prone to blunders. Bremer dan Gorst, disgraced master swordsman, has sworn to reclaim his stolen honour on the battlefield. Obsessed with redemption and addicted to violence, he’s far past caring how much blood gets spilled in the attempt. Even if it’s his own. A before-and-after chapter showing the first draft, the last draft, and many stages in between if one of the most critical chapters of the book Special thanks to my Patrons on Patreon for giving me extra support towards my passion for reading and reviewing! Curnden Craw, the last honest man in the North, has gained nothing from a life of warfare but swollen knees and frayed nerves. He hardly even cares who wins any more, he just wants to do the right thing. But can he even tell what that is with the world burning down around him? I was eager to put my eyes on “The Heroes”, because I was still high from Best Served Cold and I didn’t read Mr. Abercrombie’s book for some time. The fact is that “The Heroes” decreased my fangirlism a little bit. But let’s start from the tasty bits.

However, what really makes this book stand out is the exploration of role models, the absurd glorification of war and human cynicism. This book is rather ironically titled “The Heroes”. While we follow the so-called “heroes” of this war, Abercrombie masterfully highlights how flawed our role models often are. Consequently, this book focuses heavily on the downfalls of human nature, which you would think would make this a depressing read. However, Abercrombie’s humour perfectly balances out the “grimness” of the story, making this feel like a very entertaining and thought-provoking read. After the fighting subsides, the two sides do agree to peace-talks. Dow uncovers Calder's plotting, but is goaded into a trial by combat. Stepping into the circle, Dow doesn't even break a sweat against Calder, but insults his enforcer, Caul Shivers, one too many times. Shivers splits Dow’s skull with his own sword, and Calder is unexpectedly declared the winner. In the peace-talks, the cunning Calder plans to deliberately stall, knowing the Union’s impatience to deal with other enemies will get him better terms. Unfortunately, that night, he is abducted by Bayaz, who explains his ulterior motives for the entire war and all the lives lost; to rearrange the leadership in the North. With Dow out of the way, Calder will serve as his puppet King of the Northmen. Shaking with fury, the Big Chief drew his dread sword Dreadblade, shimmering in the torchlight, and brandished it balefully before the mouthy critic.
