About this deal

Faster equals louder. You need to run the unit at a higher setting to achieve the same heat output as the 5kW version. This means higher fan and fuel pump pulse rate (which means it’ll be louder if you’re in a larger van or you’re in a camper trailer with lots of canvas) It’s a completely different story with a budget Chinese diesel heater. If you do get a warranty, it isn’t going to be worth much. That said, these heaters are a fraction of the cost of the German models, so there isn’t really much to complain about on that front! Where To Install a Diesel Heater in a Van Chinese diesel heaters don’t have automatic altitude adjustment, but there is online advice on how to manually adjust the settings of your Chinese diesel heater to accommodate altitude changes. I was planning on installing a diesel heater so I needed to find out: what size diesel heater do I need? Do I need a 2kW or 5kW diesel heater? Complete with an internal mounting plate, the Airtronic D2L diesel air space heater by Eberspacher is ideal for use in your campervan or as supplementary heating in your motor home. Being diesel powered makes the Airtronic D2L extremely practical for both availability of fuel and use off-grid. A popular choice for air space heating, the Airtronic D2L allows you to heat your living space without running the engine which means no more defrosting of windows your campervan or motorhome. Compact, efficient and programmable!

b. Underslung gas tank – you’ll need to find a good position under the van with room for the tank and a strong part of the chassis to bolt to. Both options will still require running fuel lines to and from the heater, ensuring it’s free from any rough surfaces and anything that could harm the cable. As I mentioned above, you can either connect your diesel heater directly to your main diesel tank, or you can have a separate fuel tank. This is subject to personal preference and ease of installation. Connecting directly to the main tank is a much more efficient way due to low cost, space-saving and ease of filling up. One of the most impressive things about these heaters, which I’ve come to appreciate over the years, is their remarkable fuel efficiency. They consume only a tiny amount of diesel, making them a cost-effective choice for long trips or living winter van life.

Noise pollution – all diesel heaters will create some noise whilst running, particularly during the start up cycle. The noise is worse from outside the van than from inside it. Let me give you the inside scoop on what a motorhome diesel heater is all about. This little marvel is a fuel-efficient, compact, and powerful heating solution designed to keep your motorhome or campervan toasty warm in even the coldest conditions. The secret to its success lies in using diesel fuel as its primary energy source, ensuring consistent and comfortable warmth throughout your living space. On our heater, I have recently fitted a new design of silencer which not only reduces the noise level but also changes the note of the exhaust which is more pleasant on the ears. It may be cold outside but inside your campervan you will be super cosy and comfortable! We believe that happy campervanning begins with keeping warm :) Needs to periodically run them on high. To stop diesel heaters getting a build up of carbon they need to be run on high. Because 5kW units are more efficient they’re typically run lower… so they need to be run on high for 15 mins or so every now and then.

The capacity of the PLANAR 2D air heater is between 0.8 kW and 2 kW, and it is capable of heating up 75 m3 of air hourly. It maintains excellent economy and uses between 0.1 litres and 0.24 litres of diesel per hour. Some people go as far as to install underfloor heating in their campervan or heated towel rails or combi heaters. If you can think of any way to heat a house, someone has probably tried it for van life. A more expensive model will come with a manufacturer’s guarantee and could be a better choice in the long run.Carbon monoxide poisoning is no joke, and if this gas accumulates in a small space it can be deadly. That’s why it’s a really good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector in your camper van, especially if you’re using propane for cooking and heating. No need for extra tanks. There are lots of good reasons to use a propane heater in your van, but the main downside to using propane is having to use external storage tanks. If you own a diesel van like a Sprinter, you can run a diesel heater directly from your vehicle’s main fuel tank. Although drilling into your fuel tank might sound scary, a professional will be able to do the job in no time. Plus, most Sprinters have an auxiliary tap on the fuel tank, so no drilling necessary! But let’s assume you’re living in your van all winter and want to stay warm- what’s the best way to heat your camper?

The type of system fitted will depend on the year/model/make of the van- more modern vans tend to have much more efficient systems. (They also tend to have much better van insulation, which is important for using your motorhome in winter.) Log burning stoves get really hot (they normally burn at 650 o C and can get up to 1,100 o C!), so you’ll need to take quite a few steps to ensure a log burner is installed safely, although none of them are particularly technical. Yes, you can try and keep nice and toasty with more traditional methods like wearing layers, wrapping up in big, heavy blankets and drinking gallons of warm drinks (that’s unless it’s too cold and your gas supply has frozen so you can’t even boil your kettle...yikes)! Older gas systems (often used as caravan heaters) are controlled by buttons/knobs on the unit itself. Although these are older variations, new models of this type of system are still available. How much electricity does my combi heating use in my van? Diesel heaters use a 12-volt power supply, and draw power from your batteries to get started. They also use power to run the fuel pump and the fan. The initial surge can be quite sizable — up to 15 amps from a cold start — so this is something you’ll have to bear in mind. Make sure your power supply can handle this surge, and don’t connect the heater to your coach battery. After a few seconds, the power draw drops to around 4 amps for a few minutes. Once the heater is warm, it’ll only be using around 1 amp per hour. NoiseIt doesn’t have a thermostat, rather it has different heat settings which can be adjusted on the digital control panel or via the remote control. There is also the option to set a timer – instant heat from the comfort of your van bed! I next turned my attention to the air intake for our heater. I have my air intake pipe running through a length of Armaflex pipe insulation to help absorb the noise, and I have also made and fitted a silencer which has helped greatly. Installation takes around 6 hours and can include full fitting of the heater, plumbing into your vehicle’s fuel supply and to your leisure battery if required. Engine Lifesaver:** The independent heating device prevents engine wear and tear, potentially extending engine life by 30%.

If you have a bigger campervan, such as a Mercedes Sprinter or a Renault Master (like I have), opt for a 5KW heater or bigger. Webasto are a well established company with a reputation for building high quality products. This is a high end product which is reliable and well supported however, this obviously comes with a big price tag. I selected this heater as the premium heater choice over a similar model by German company Eberspacher, because they are slightly cheaper for the comparable quality.

My advice would be to go for a well-known broker. After all, a poorly made heating system could kill you in your sleep if it leaks carbon monoxide. Diesel heating- how much power does it need? Buying a diesel night heater for campervan use in the UK can be a hard decision with such a wide range of options and prices.
