About this deal

Add an extra pump to the output on the left side of the control box. This pump can be controlled on a timer, for up to 5 minutes at a time. Use it daily to keep your greenhouse or polytunnel tank topped up. In the future we will add sensors so that the pump can be run only when water is needed. What irrigation parts are compatible with WaterMate? As their allotments never had access to running water, they decided to improve the situation and construct their first water station. The water station is additional to plot holders own water collection systems, used for emergency and dry spells though the summer months. I can see a potential problem with the design in high winds where the force would be upwards on the sheeting. It’s important that the sheets are properly fixed to the frame. Storage The containers are in the shade, they are fed by my 6×8 shed and a 4ft square cover, there’s a debris mesh on the way in and a micro mesh filter on the way out to protect the pump and sprayer. (they are tee’d into each other so it takes from both at the same time)

No, the Harvst WaterMate will run fine without soil moisture sensors. It will still respond to environmental conditions using heat and light. You can add sensors at a later date. Can I run greenhouse heaters and greenhouse lighting with WaterMate?

Placing the containers

I reach for my rake at seed planting time. The first step is to dig over the bed to loosen the soil, and the second step is to rake the soil to create a fine level surface. This will make it easier for seedlings to burst through after germination. Rakes are also useful for collecting weeds and other debris that may fall onto a plot.

I like to grow a lot of fruit at my allotment, and good bypass secateurs make a cleaner cut when pruning fruit stems, canes, and branches.

The challenge with this approach is that it creates a big demand for watering. Pots dry out faster than plants grown in the ground, and the crops I grow all mature in summer when the heat is highest. The combination of big plants growing in containers during the hottest days of the year means that watering may be needed twice daily. Infrequent and inconsistent watering at worst can kill the plant, but can also spoil the crop. The plants may set much less fruit, and the fruit they do produce may split or mold, or not swell to full size. Over the years, the initial investment will be repaid and more. Tools should last for many years, and an experienced gardener will learn to grow more with less, what grows best on their plot, ways of extending the harvest season, and how to store crops over the winter months. As this will pump water out to 25m, that is ideal as each of the 4 plots is 25m long x 5m wide. So with just 50m of hose pipe and a few empty barrels I can effectively move water from the top of both plots down to the bottom plots. Lots of plants need tying up at the allotment. Twine is useful to mark seed rows after sowing and prior to germination. Wigwams made from branches or canes would not be possible without garden twine to hold them together. Tomato plants would fall over without being supported. Leafy vegetables and salad crops Crops such as cabbages, chard and spinach along with salad crops need water at every stage of growth.

With three different fountain nozzle designs, this water pump is perfect for fish ponds, bird baths, small ponds, and off-grid solar projects. Battery powered water pumps are used for processing, transfer or filling – for example a battery pump could be used in a water bowser to enable the pumping of water for watering plants etc. Alternating current power, on the other hand, is better for larger agricultural and industrial projects. AC power pumps have a higher maximum flow rate and can supply a lot more power. Unless you are installing a deep well pump or any other large-scale project, you probably do not need to spend the extra money for an AC power solar unit. Size of Water System Leaving me time to install the remaining hundreds of meters of hose and emitters. Then set up enough barrels or IBC tanks to really be able to hold a decent reservoir of water. PowerForAll has many advantages not least the fact that once you have a tool with a few batteries then there is no need to buy the more expensive versions with battery & charger, you can just go ahead & buy the much cheaper no battery versions! If a battery is run consistently with little charge, for example by drawing more power than the solar panel provides, this can damage the battery beyond repair. I know this from first hand experience, and I am now careful not to overuse the battery. The way I use my polytunnel creates a much bigger requirement for watering. I like to grow a range of heat loving plants like tomatoes, peppers, aubergine, cucumber, chillies, Inca berries, and tomatillos. If I grew these in beds inside a polytunnel, I would run the risk of building up soil born diseases, as I would be using the soil over and over to grow the same crops. To avoid this, I grow all my plants in big pots and containers. This allows me to recycle the soil every year, and use fresh compost for my plants. Then finish up wall the remaining watering by simply moving the pump to the next watering point and connect to the next part of the irrigation loop requiring either watering or watering and feeding! Combined with a 1200mAh battery, the solar energy can keep this pump running on sunny days, cloudy days, and even at night. On my allotment there is no mains water supply. Instead, dotted around the plot are water pumps. Watering plants is a manual task of pumping water up from the ground, and walking it to where it is needed.
