About this deal

Rubber Soul” is one of the best albums ever made in British 60’s music as well as one of The Beatles’ best out of their discography. It was absolutely the right thing for The Beatles to develop and grow up musically and artistically; otherwise, their music would’ve sounded boring and outdated. KRLA's radio documentary series Pop Chronicles, which aired from 1969, dubbed this "renaissance" in music "the Rubberization of Soul". [290]

The songs demonstrate the Beatles' increasing maturity as lyricists, and in their incorporation of brighter guitar tones and new instrumentation such as sitar, harmonium, and fuzz bass, the group striving for more expressive sounds and arrangements for their music. The project marked a progression in the band's treatment of the album format as an artistic platform, an approach they continued to develop with Revolver (1966) and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). The four songs omitted by Capitol, including the February 1966 single " Nowhere Man", later appeared on the North American release Yesterday and Today.

A sitar (top) and a Mannborg harmonium. Along with fuzz bass and varispeed-treated piano, these instruments were among the unusual sounds the band used for the first time during the Rubber Soul sessions. All following have a different, newer label design ("ST 33" on bottom is more round, newer typeface): Everett comments on the significance of the band's interest in the harmonium, sitar and fuzz bass each occurring during the same period, pointing out that the three sounds overlap in their offering a wide vibrative quality and "more richly discordant" tones. By the way: Dylan was a big Beatles fan as well – he later “confessed” that he didn’t dare to say so at the time because to his purist folk hipster friends they were sellouts that represented the bad bad establishement (the same “friends” that turned on him when he went electric – a move probably inspired by the Beatles and/or the whole British invasion).
