About this deal

Planet Earth III will be the most ambitious natural history landmark ever undertaken by the BBC. Combining the awe and wonder of the original Planet Earth, the new science and discoveries of Blue Planet II and Planet Earth II, and the immersive character-led storytelling of Dynasties, the series will take the ‘Planet Earth’ experience to new heights. It will air in 2022. The first episode sets up these worlds and the fact that they're perhaps more varied than you might imagine. It also explains why these regions are cold. With the help of scientists we installed ruggedized time lapse cameras at the top of Quelccaya in the Andes, and down in Rothera in Antarctica, as well as up in Svalbard in the Arctic. We've positioned time lapse cameras long term to show the change taking place on our watch. We have also commandeered satellites to capture these changes from space, to get the bigger picture.

GPS-programmed drone technology allowed the Frozen Planet II team to fly specific routes multiple times to capture the landscape changing over several months and was used for the first time to film permafrost slumps thawing and developing over a matter of weeks. The waters surrounding Antarctica may be the richest of all, but they are also home to an exceptionally sophisticated predator, the killer whale. To reach their favoured prey, Weddell seals, a family of killer whales have learnt to generate their own waves, washing the seals off their ice floes. It’s a technique that has been passed down over generations and is coordinated by the family matriarch, who can be over 100 years old. Each episode of the six-part BBC series lasts 60 minutes and looks at a particular habitat. This week, episode 6 of Frozen Planet II, introduces us to the scientists who dedicate their lives to understand how our world is changing and how the lives of the animals in these delicate ecosystems, and how our own lives, might change with the change of climate. As ever, the show starts at 8pm BST on Sunday. Make sure you know how to watch Frozen Planet II from anywhere. Frozen Planet II air dates

I was the Series Producer of Blue Planet II and the big question that followed was... what should we do next? We’d just done Planet Earth II, which covered life across the world's continents, as well as Seven Worlds, One Planet. We also did the big exploration of the underwater world, but what we felt was missing was a follow-up to the other big hit of its day, Frozen Planet. When we air this autumn it will be nearly eleven years since the original series first broadcast. So we felt that now was the time to re-examine, re-explore and celebrate life in our frozen regions. With intimate new character stories, dramatic new behaviors and never-seen-before spectacles: Blue Planet II goes Frozen. When filming caribou in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, the team took advantage of 24-daylight conditions by using solar power to charge batteries. The solar panel kit was good enough to daily charge four cameras, four laptops and two satellite phones every day for four weeks. Filming Locations These are the last true wildernesses on earth; places so challenging for survival that only a heroic cast of animals can live here. From polar bears to penguins, Siberian tigers to snow monkeys, each species must overcome unique challenges to survive their extreme environments. The hooded seal can inflate a large balloon like sac from its left nostril. This is done by shutting one nostril valve and inflating a membrane which then protrudes from the other nostril. It is the only animal to perform this extraordinary behaviour. In extremely remote regions such as the Southern Ocean the light-weight drone was also key to success in capturing cinematic imagery of Antarctic blue whales, made possible only by the support of an Australian Antarctic Division scientific expedition to study these seldom-seen animals. Leaving Antarctica and travelling north, we discover frozen habitats that are created by altitude. The greatest of these is the Himalaya, the tallest mountain range on earth, which contains so much ice and snow it is known as the third pole. In the shadow of the Himalaya lies a vast frozen grassy plain that is home to the fluffiest cat in the world, Pallas’s cat. It may have extremely dense fur, but if it’s to survive the Mongolian winter, it needs to catch lots of gerbils and voles. Easier said than done when you only have short legs and paws that are sensitive to the cold.

The incredible ice-covered mountains of the Karakorum range have seldom been filmed. The Frozen Planet II team gained access to fly with the Pakistani Military and document both the ice fields and the mythical mountain, K2. Flying at over 7,000m, this was one of the highest altitude aerial filming trips ever undertaken by the BBC Natural History Unit and the pilot and crew had to be on oxygen at all times. The Boreal forest is the largest forest on Earth containing some 750 million trees. It circles the globe from North America and Canada, across Europe and into Russia. Across eight episodes, the series will have a truly global scale, with new technology central to its approach. Crews will spend longer in the field than ever before, and using the latest technology, including robotic cameras, stabilized rigs and deep submersibles, will take viewers from the highest mountains to the deepest oceans, from the darkest caves to the hottest deserts. Frozen Planet II review – TV so relentlessly wondrous that you'll feel like a child again". The Guardian. 11 September 2022 . Retrieved 19 September 2022. I hope people will feel that, while this is a wonderful celebration and an opportunity to be transported to these magical worlds, at the same time there is a fierce contemporary relevance to these stories.

Narrated by Emmy ®-winner Sir David Attenborough, One Planet: Seven Worlds (w/t) is a brand new ambitious seven-part landmark nature docu-series. Each one-hour episode will transport viewers to a single continent and tell the story of its spectacular wildlife and iconic landscapes. Millions of years ago incredible forces ripped apart the Earth’s crust creating seven extraordinary continents.
