About this deal

Maxwell is all about achieving better performance while cutting power consumption. Nvidia has done this by rearranging its stream processors – the parts that do the heavy lifting inside a GPU core.

The GeForce GTX 960 was a performance-segment graphics card by NVIDIA, launched on January 22nd, 2015. Built on the 28 nm process, and based on the GM206 graphics processor, in its GM206-300-A1 variant, the card supports DirectX 12. This ensures that all modern games will run on GeForce GTX 960. The GM206 graphics processor is an average sized chip with a die area of 228 mm² and 2,940 million transistors. It features 1024 shading units, 64 texture mapping units, and 32 ROPs. NVIDIA has paired 2,048 MB GDDR5 memory with the GeForce GTX 960, which are connected using a 128-bit memory interface. The GPU is operating at a frequency of 1127 MHz, which can be boosted up to 1178 MHz, memory is running at 1753 MHz (7 Gbps effective). Spec for spec, this RX 470 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the R7 370, by boasting 79.9 % more fps. The RX 470 has 4 GB RAM compared to the R7 370 's 2 GB video memory. Its results at these resolutions were very similar to those from the Asus card.Graphics card memory (RAM) capacity. The higher the better for higher resolution textures and future

According to Nvidia, the reference card is so efficient that when rendering less intensive games it should only produce around 30W of heat – meaning the card’s fans won’t need to spin up at all. The newer the better technology and performance optimization and Nvidia’s changes result in a peak processing level of 2,308 GFLOPs. That’s a minor improvement on the 2,257 GFLOPs of the GTX 760 but it does of course come with those power saving benefits. It is, however, further below its AMD rivals, both of which offer at least 3,290 GFLOPs. Maximum recorded temperature under load. The lower the better for longer life of the graphics card.GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, GeForce GTX 1080, GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, GeForce GTX 1070, GeForce GTX 1060, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, GeForce GTX 1050, GeForce GT 1030, GeForce GT 1010 We’ve used 3D Mark’s Fire Strike test and four Unigine Heaven benchmarks to test theoretical performance, and we’ve taken idle and load temperatures and power requirements to see which card is the coolest and most frugal. The GPU is paired with 2GB of GDDR5 RAM via a 128-bit memory bus. This reduces the overall memory bandwidth compared to the 256-bit bus we see on AMD cards at this price, but the GM206 GPU is designed to use that bandwidth more efficiently than previous-generation Nvidia cards. In real world terms this bandwidth will be ample for playing most games at 1,920×1,080; it’s only when increasing resolutions beyond Full HD that memory bandwidth truly becomes a concern. There are four of those smaller multiprocessors inside each GPC, which allows Nvidia to delegate tasks with more precision – and, therefore, operate more frugally. It’s an improvement over the “brute force” approach used on older cards, like the GTX 760, which had two larger multiprocessors per GPC. Maxwell’s revised GPCs don’t need as much resource-sharing hardware, either, which further cuts down power draw. The Nvidia GTX 960 is a mid-range GPU, built for 1,920×1,080 gaming at 60 frames per second with all graphics settings enabled. It uses similar Maxwell architecture to the GTX 750, albeit with a redesigned GM206 GPU with 1,024 CUDA cores running at 1,127MHz. When thermal limits allow, these cores can boost up to 1,178MHz.

Once we increased the resolution to 2,560×1,440, the card had no problem in Dirt Showdown, and we saw a just-playable 31.9fps in Tomb Raider, increasing to 49.6fps once we exchanged SSAA for FXAA anti-aliasing. Even Metro ran at a smooth 33.4fps at this resolution once we disabled SSAA, and Dirt Showdown ran at a playable 32.8fps at a huge 3,840×2,160.GeForce GTX 590, GeForce GTX 580, GeForce GTX 570, GeForce GTX 560 Ti, GeForce GTX 560 SE, GeForce GTX 560, GeForce GTX 555, GeForce GTX 550 Ti, GeForce GT 545, GeForce GT 530, GeForce GT 520, GeForce 510 GeForce GTX 480, GeForce GTX 470, GeForce GTX 465, GeForce GTX 460 SE v2, GeForce GTX 460 SE, GeForce GTX 460, GeForce GTS 450, GeForce GT 440, GeForce GT 430, GeForce GT 420 Our test rig consists of an Asus X79-Deluxe motherboard, Intel Core i7-4960X processor, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB hard disk. MSI has used its own TwinFrozr custom cooler for the MSI GTX 960 Gaming 2G. The two-fan cooling system uses massive 100mm fans that ensure the underlying GPU is kept as cool as possible. These fans won’t actually spin up until temperatures hit around 65 degrees, meaning silent operation on the Windows desktop.
