About this deal

Carol says how she wants to stay in Wales ‘where its nice’. Russell makes us feel empathy for Carol because he conveys to us just how rough and unstable their area is. Like Mrs Kay said

This shows that Briggs isn’t used to the way the children have been brought up. Their situation and upbringings are a real contrast in comparison his because he has obviously been brought up differently. When Mr Briggs talks to Andrews about his smoking he sounds genuinely concerned and. Briggs is curious to know the parents reactions to the boys smoking. When Carol approaches the zebra crossing her conversation with Les, the lollipop man shows that children in this area are not normally enthusiastic to go to school. The most noticeable difference from the musical was the omission of the characters John and Mac, who, in the musical, are the rural shop owners in Wales who get robbed by the kids. In the filmed version, they are replaced by two women. Well… if the antics in her department are anything to go by… She always reminds me of a mother hen rather than a teacher…’

Our Day Out Coursework                                          Victoria  Olubi

This again shows that she wants them to enjoy themselves. She is simple and at times, thinks as a child. On the other hand they could be having this conversation because she has let something bad happen before. Russell starts the scene with Briggs’s stern tone. He is not angry but not particularly sympathetic. On the other hand Mr Briggs professional attitude encourages the children to behave maturely, whilst Mrs Kay’s behaviour can be irresponsible.

Once the coach and kids are gone Mrs Kay invites Briggs for a drink. However ‘the school is looming behind him’ reminding him that he has his reputation to think about. He has already stepped out of line today and he can’t afford to do it again. The conversation between Mrs Kay and Carol shows that, because Mrs Kay is positive, Carol tries to believe that she can move out of Liverpool if she learns to read and write. Carol puts aside the fact that she lives in a chaotic area and sets herself the goal of achieving freedom.

Our Day Out" is the 16th episode of eighth season of the British BBC anthology TV series Play for Today. The episode was a television play that was originally broadcast on 28 December 1977. "Our Day Out" was written by Willy Russell, directed by Pedr James, produced by David Rose, and starred Jean Heywood, Alun Armstrong, Elizabeth Estensen, Robert Gillespie, Iona Banks, and Peter Tilbury. Briggs starts to panic here. He ‘stops, astounded’. He’s too scared to move unsure of whether she will jump or not. Due to popular demand, it was shown again in February 1978 as part of the BBC's Play for Today series and was also re-broadcast in 1979 and again in August 1990 and on BBC Four in 2008. [1] Russell has also written television projects, including the one-off drama, Our Day Out, which aired in 1977. He penned another television drama, One Summer, which aired as a five-part series on Channel 4 in 1983, starring a young David Morrissey. In scene 31, Mrs Kay proves to be a better teacher, by encouraging the children to express their feelings.

If Mrs Kay can influence a grown adult, then she is certainly impressionable to these young children. These children need to be set good examples because in this social environment they are impressionable. This comment shows that he thinks badly of everyone. This is therefore setting a bad example to the children. When the children are surrounded around negatively all the time, it is no surprise that they behave badly. Mrs Kay is the only person to be optimistic. Here Briggs is rude, he doesn’t use manners and he uses the word girl, which suggests he doesn’t like building personal relationships with the students. However it’s not just with the students he is like this with. He is very professional with the teachers also. This indicates that Mrs Kay has a reputation as being unprofessional, stupid and is considered a bad teacher. This comment suggests that he thinks that her behaviour is stupid and she is a bad influence to the children.
