About this deal

Unfortunately, the sort of content the system typically promotes tends to be of niche interest, to say the least, and navigating through the menus and between the Smart interface and the TV set-up menus can be frustratingly unintuitive. The good news is that aside from not supporting Freeview Play, the UE43BU8000’s smart system is outstandingly rich in apps and video streaming content. All the most popular streaming services are present and correct (including the individual catch-up apps of the UK terrestrial TV services typically found within the Freeview Play app), and all deliver 4K and high dynamic range (HDR) where a service provider carries them. Testing a TV is a long and complex process because a modern TV simply does so much. Not only does it need to handle a variety of content resolutions – standard-def, 1080p, 4K and sometimes 8K – and both standard dynamic range and high dynamic range (the latter in a number of formats), all of which need to be specifically tested, it also has a sound system with various advanced settings and a full smart platform. A TV is an all-in-one device in the best sense, but that also makes it a challenging review proposition.

Slim chassis, great spec and very agreeable picture performance is all well and good – but when it comes to audio performance, the Samsung BU8500 sounds like an affordable flatscreen TV of the old school. And that’s not necessarily a good thing.

But while the A95K isn't brighter than the brightest traditional OLED TV, it does deliver better bright highlights with subtle shades and colors that its non-QD-OLED rivals miss. Whereas clouding is aggressive sufficient in a single or two areas of the display screen to actually distract you should you’re watching TV in any distant darkroom setup, misplaced shadow element could make darkish scenes look flatter and extra empty than shiny ones. . This is an OLED TV that features LG Display’s OLED EX panel, which was introduced in 2022 and is brighter than those that went before it. To this, LG added its own algorithms and processing to produce what it refers to as an OLED Evo TV with Brightness Booster.

That's only going to be a big deal for very dedicated gamers, though. For everyone else, the Sony A80L is an all-rounder that’s very hard to resist – though we would still recommend waiting for its price to come down a bit if you can. The Samsung BU8500's ports are largely easy to access. (Image credit: Future) Samsung BU8500 review: Features During setup, the adjustment to color balance is on a bit of a hair-trigger – it’ll tip from ‘just slightly understated’ to ‘rather too lively’ in no time. But play around a bit to find the optimum balance and the color palette is naturalistic, convincing and wide-ranging. Skin-tones, in particular, are detailed and varied.

The Venn diagram of performance and price is almost a perfect circle here

The pleasingly upfront quality to the UE43BU8000’s pictures isn’t replicated at all by its audio. On the contrary, it sounds almost painfully thin and low on impact, with practically no forward projection. Everything seems to be happening behind the screen, in some movie world far removed from your own. While it might be tempting to think that bigger is better, the size of set that’s right for you is closely dependent on how close to the screen you’ll be sitting, and the resolution of the source material you’re watching. Most are side-facing – which helps with routing cables – but an HDMI port and digital optical out are rear-facing, so if you want to connect a third source, you may need one of those right-angled HDMI connectors.
