I will surely read more from him, but with a more critical eye now that he's fallen off the first impression pedestal I've put him on. She's Come Undone is the 1992 debut novel by Wally Lamb. The novel was selected as the fourth book for Oprah's Book Club in December 1996. [1] Lamb's novel was named a finalist for the 1992 Los Angeles Book Awards' Art Seidenbaum Prize for first fiction. [2] She's Come Undone has been translated into eighteen languages. Between 1965 and 1974 the Canadian quintet had twenty-one songs enter the Top 100 chart; six made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "American Woman" for 3 weeks on May 3rd, 1970. After reading (listening to) this story (forcibly Suggested by a friend) I have come to realize that I am indeed Dolores Price - born a few years later - but also Molested and traumatized on several levels. I am currently in my FAT Phase - and Im motivated - and I found as I was Cheering for Delores to allow herself happiness - I realized I TOO was denying myself happiness.Even a person who should understand her pain and what she faces as an obese person, really turns out to be a user, and that part was very hard to read.

She's Come Undone follows Dolores from early childhood as her father leaves her with her mentally ill mother, through college, up to her middle age.

Wally Lamb

Dolores had a crappy life. Her father who she loved walks out on Dolores and her mother. Mom has to work for the first time in her life and Dolores becomes a latchkey kid. She took solace in eating after she was horribly raped by a neighbor. She ate until she got really big. She ate to fill the hole inside of herself and to take away the pain. It didn't work. It wasn't so bad until her mother died, and it really went downhill. Both The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars' 21st episode of the fourth season is called She's Come Undone. Rebekah: "I was wondering if you were gonna say hello or keep ignoring me." Matt: "I was working. I see you compelled the bartenders again." Rebekah: "I'm celebrating. My brothers and I have parted company. Elijah and Nik ran off to New Orleans to chase God knows what, and I am finally free." Matt: "Yeah, I heard about that." Rebekah: "Did you hear I lost the cure, too? I was this close to the life that I always wanted and then poof, gone in a heartbeat." Matt: "I'm sorry. I know how much you wanted it." Rebekah: "Please. I know you were planning to steal it for Elena. I never had a chance did I?" Matt: "I meant what I said, but if you want to feel sorry for yourself, go ahead." Dante seemed merely a pawn, convenient to the author for whatever drama he wanted to introduce to Dolores, but there was no consistency in him throughout the book. This is one of my all time favorite books. I just recently reread the book and fell in love all over again. It had been some time since I read the book and felt I should refresh my memory since I recommend it to so many.

I absolutely wanted to listen to it all in one sitting, it was that good. But I didn't opt for the abridged version, which I could have listened to in one sitting because I didn't want to miss any of the story. I'm glad I didn't. It was a book club selection, and I wanted to be able to fully participate in the discussion.. Following the accidental death of her mother, Dolores decides to attend the academically underwhelming Merton College in Pennsylvania. There Dolores is ridiculed for her weight and cultivates a secret obsession with her roommate's long-distance boyfriend, Dante, who sends love letters and nude photos in the mail. After an ill-conceived one-night stand with Dottie, the university's lesbian custodian, she takes a long cab ride to Cape Cod, where she witnesses a beached whale dying. She feels kinship with the animal and wades into the water to drown herself. He was the director of the Writing Center at the Norwich Free Academy, Norwich, Connecticut from 1989-1998, and an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Connecticut’s English Department. He holds a B.A. in Education and an M.A. in English from the University of Connecticut and an M.F.A. in Writing from Vermont College.I know for other people the part of the plot revolving around her weight and the depiction of the lesbian character are what made this book off putting but I felt like the way people were treating Dolores because of her weight was pretty realistic especially for the time period its supposed to be happening in. I also didn't find Dottie to be some kind of predatory caricature, it felt like she was lonely and Dolores is the one who called her the night they have dinner at Dottie's place. I think that was a pretty nuanced depiction of how people who have been sexually assaulted before may end up in situations where they are likely to be coerced. Elena is tortured for the first time in the series by Damon and Stefan. She takes everything they do to her without complaint, and doesn't break down as they had hoped. I honestly don't know how I feel about this book. I remember loving I Know This Much Is True (even though if you ask me what the plot is I couldn't tell you) so kind of felt let down after reading this. I didn't hate the book but I can see why other people did. I think it's a hard book to read if you can't stomach flawed characters. For a lot of the book Dolores' actions made her unlikable even if the way she behaves is pretty human and understandable. This is about the struggle of a young girl, in a dysfunctional family, victim of rape, who became obese. It’s a story of a woman overcoming her trauma and where it got her. Since its publication, readers have commented over and over at Lamb's masterful portrayal of women. He renders Dolores as a downtrodden victim who somehow miraculously maintains her sense of humor and ultimately develops the self-esteem she has been missing all along. Dolores's voice resonates with readers long after they have finished Lamb's novel.
