Y las pierde en los personajes, flojitos. Y en la ambientación, flojita. Y en que la vida en la legión romana es una pincelada simplota y las batallas tres cuartos de lo mismo. Pero entretiene. The story itself includes less military action than I expected, though there are intense action scenes in it. There is a fair amount of political intrigue, mainly because many army officers had political, even imperial, ambitions. I thought that balance was good and was glad it wasn’t a long battle bloodfest. This author is a master of writing combat sequences and making the reader feel the confusion that participants would. There were times that I felt tension and unease along with the characters as situations grew tense and dangerous.

An enjoyable read. Historical fiction about a Roman legion, soon after 40AD, firstly facing some hairy, bloodthirsty German barbarians at the frontiers of the Roman Empire, and then taking part in the invasion of Britain and facing some hairy, bloodthirsty British barbarians! The tale starts off with Cato and Macro escorting Queen Boudica of the Iceni towards Londinium to renew her pledge to Rome and its Governor Suetonius, after the death of her husband King Prasutagus of the Iceni, when during that voyage she's robbed of her tribute to Rome by some Roman bandits.

I read a lot of roman story writers Anthony Riches, SJA Turney and they all say you can only work with actual real life people who were in the provinces at the time. As ever, the level of historical research is astounding and the pace is frenetic. The ending had me gasping and the twenty-second book cannot come soon enough!

I found the descriptions of life in Britain in the I century very interesting and they made me wish I know more about the lifestyle.

With the military distracted, slow-burning anger amongst the tribespeople bursts into flames. The king of the Iceni is dead and a proud kingdom is set for plundering and annexation. But the widow is Queen Boudica, a woman with a warrior's heart. If Boudica calls for death to the emperor, a bloodbath will follow. This is a sweeping novel, a novel for me which is all about the characters and the story. Simon Scarrow is a supreme storyteller Mi primer Scarrow. No me acuerdo por qué lo metí al "to read", creo que lo recomendó alguien y...bueno, bien, se lee de forma grata, hay mucha acción, mucho diálogo y la trama tiene su interés. Ahí gana las estrellas. This is the first in Scarrow’s Eagle series and I am a little anal about always insisting on starting at the beginning of a series rather than jumping in half way through even if, as in the case of Scarrow, he has already written some 11 novels as part of said series. However, I was really excited about discovering this. I studied A Level Latin and some ancient history at University. I am intrigued by all things Roman and Spartan in particular and having absolutely adored Madeline Miller’s ‘The Song of Achilles’ last year, was genuinely looking forward to discovering a series that I could read over several months or even years given Scarrow’s productivity. Sadly, this is not to be…I doubt I will be returning to Macro or Cato or their ludicrous legion. It’s AD60 and Prasutagus has died leaving Boudica as Queen of the Iceni in Britannia. Rome has long wanted to quell rebellious Britannia and put an end to the different tribes - including the Iceni.

This book is action from the off. We drop straight into the story as Queen Boudica’s husband dies and feel her immediate struggles, as a wife, a mother, but primarily as a leader with men waiting in the wings to remove power if she’s willing to allow it. I go through genre phases, and historical fiction and Greek/Roman philosophy and history is where my mind was focused for a while. I finished studying stoicism and decided to read this novel by Scarrow that has been in my Kindle library for a couple of years. I am glad I did. Meanwhile, Cato has been sent northwest to harry and conquer once and for all the Druids and their followers. By moving the major Roman army units away from southern England, the Romans inadvertently created the opening and window of opportunity for Boudica's rebellion. Again, we know that from history. Cato and the Romans must now counter-march and return to the southeast in an attempt to save Londinium (London). Every year, Simon manages to publish at least one book based on the adult Roman and historical fiction novels. The house in which he lives in Norfolk is a 400 year old mansion which was built by the Romans in the 1st century A.D. In fact, the major portion of Norfolk was colonized by the Romans. One of the protagonists Quintus Licinius Cato has just arrived as the new young recruit in the Second Legion, which is considered as the toughest Roman Army. Initially, he finds it difficult to adjust to the rigorous military life and he also has to face the disgust from his colleagues as he gets appointed at a higher rank because of his connection with the Imperial Palace. The novel is set in AD43 and involves the heroes in our legion attempting to invade Britain. Behind the scenes there's plenty of murky political plotting going on, and Scarrow gets plenty of mileage out of the sinister machinications. Half the game is trying to figure out who bears what hidden allegiance and then seeing if you're right. It all gets rather complicated but not uninteresting.

With the aim of attracting more readers, the publishers of the series had decided to drop the word Eagle from the title of the series in the year 2007. However, the idea seemed to be quite absurd and they decided to continue with the same title. At this point, I am not sure where Scarrow will be going with the next book. We know that Boudica disappears from history; her exact fate was never determined. There is a bombshell revelation which I will not say to avoid spoilers. After Boudica's rebellion, the next crisis to face the Roman Empire was a renewed war with Parthian. Will we see General Corbulo again?

This misfortune to Queen Boudica will set in motion a series of events that will result in the eventual begin of the revolt against the Roman oppressor, with as the main culprit of this oppression the Procurator in Londinium who's called, Decianus, with Macro as a late witness to these cruel atrocities towards Queen Boudica and her daughters, and thus Macro's world of peace at the Colony at Camulodunum will eventually turn into a hellish place of war and death, while Cato is one of the officers in Governor's Suetonius's army to conquer and annihilate the Druid stronghold of Mona. AD 60. The Roman province of Britannia is in chaos. Boudica's warrior horde, emboldened by a surprise victory at Camulodunum, is gaining numbers from other tribes looking to overthrow their Roman overlords... and Londinium is their next target. As his childhood was spent in traveling from place to place because of his parents, he got the time to finally write something worthy only after his graduation. Firstly, he pursued his love for history by becoming a teacher and then went on to become a full time writer from 2005 onwards. The memories of Shane Koenig’s escape from his isolated cabin, and the trail of deaths he left behind haunt her waking hours, but Rose must move forwards. And when the call comes in about a suspicious death from arson, she abandons her family dinner and is on the scene within minutes. To me whilst this is a work of Historical fiction don’t be fooled into thinking I don’t read that genre so the book won’t be for me, it transcends that, revel in the quality of the writing and storytelling, engage with the characters and be prepared to take a glorious journey with two of the Romans finest and bravest Cato and Marco
