About this deal

Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3. Chard is not a perennial plant, but their lifespan does cover two growing seasons. Plants will freely seed themselves, meaning that you can plant them once and have many years of self-grown plants appearing in your garden. Common pests and diseases with Chard Why do the leaves of my chard plant have white-grey patches on them? The ideal soil pH is slightly acidic, that is with a pH of 6.1 to 6.5. Of course, there is some leeway and anything from moderately acidic to neutral will work out. Thinning

Grey Mould can affect any part of chard, spreading to and damaging other plants too. Ensure good air circulation by thinning plants as needed. Why are the leaves of my chard plant shredded around the edges? You can place netting over your containers in the spring and early summer when the pests emerge and start to feed, or you can keep your plants indoors. If you’re growing in the fall and winter, you don’t need to worry about this particular problem. Since spider mites are a little tougher to get rid of, you can turn to the big guns if you can’t get rid of them.

Heat a little olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chard stems and cook for about 2 minutes, or until they start to soften. The best time to harvest leafy greens is early in the morning. Leaves cut in the afternoon will contain less moisture and will readily wilt. Rather than starting seeds yourself, you can also get a jumpstart by buying transplants from a nursery. This option is convenient but keep in mind that it is more costly than growing from seeds. Transplants also offer less variety than seeds. Harvest throughout the year, although growth will slow in very hot and very cold weather, so quantities will fluctuate. When harvesting, always leave some greenery on the plant so that it can continue to absorb sunlight and convert this into energy for new growth. You too can incorporate Chard into your diet – Mediterranean or otherwise – as a green vegetable that is both industrious and colourful.

Swiss chard prefers cooler temperatures, so once the thermometer climbs up past 75°F or drops below freezing, your plants may bolt. That said, chard tends to resist bolting much better than other leafy greens like spinach. The good news is, it’s a little easier to control slugs in container gardens since the area you need to patrol is usually a bit more, ahem, contained. Whatever you choose, it should have plenty of drainage holes in the bottom to ensure that the roots don’t get waterlogged. Though you can plant seeds about ten days before the last expected frost date, we suggest that you wait out the last frost of the season and then sow seeds. Rhubarb Chard’ or ‘Ruby Chard’ is the cultivar that gives Swiss Chard its reputation for ornamental value. Though the leaves are tasty enough, this variety is probably one for decorative value: the scallopy, wavy leaves are a brilliant, deep shade of green while the petioles, midribs and even the veins are an equally vivid ruby red.Chard is one of those vegetables that is among the essentials of increasingly-popular Mediterranean Cuisine, and that makes sense because this leafy green is a native of Sicily.
