Murder on the Orient Express has been adapted for the screen no fewer than four times and for good reason: it’s the classic Christie whodunnit in structure, pace, character and mood. It’s also the 10th appearance in a novel for the author’s iconic Belgian detective Poirot. His job this time is to winkle out the guilty party from a bunch of eccentric first-class passengers. The ingenious and unparalleled plot is inspired by two real-life events: the stranding of an Orient Express for six days in Turkey in 1929, and the kidnap of the Lindbergh baby in 1932. Famous largely for being Miss Marple’s first appearance in a novel, The Murder at the Vicarage sees thoroughly disagreeable chap Colonel Protheroe murdered, Cluedo-style, in his library, with a gun. Surrounded by villagers who all have an axe to grind with Colonel P, Miss M uses her famous nous to eliminate seven suspects. I’ve seen it dismissed as having dated poorly, but for me this is a funny, witty and sharply observed Christie classic. Today, only two houses remain from the original Thomas Neale development of the 1690s; 61 Monmouth Street and 64 Neal Street. The next Friday, Bundle and Jimmy arrive at Wyvern Abbey and are introduced to the other guests including the Cootes, Sir Stanley Digby, Terence O'Rourke and the beautiful Hungarian Countess Radzky. Bundle is further surprised to see Superintendent Battle there. He tells her that he is at Wyvern to "keep an eye on things". Bill Eversleigh also turns up. Jimmy has told Bill what Bundle told him of the meeting of the Seven Dials. Realising that Sir Stanley is only going to be staying one night at Wyvern, they work out that any theft of the formula is going to be attempted that night and Jimmy and Bill agree to keep two separate watches, changing over at 3.00 am, both using a pistol that Jimmy has brought with him.

Even with The Reveal that Jimmy and Loraine have been criminals all along, Jimmy really has been developing feelings for Loraine, while her participation in his crimes has always been out of love for him. Their conversations where Loraine refuses to marry Jimmy "until they're safe" certainly take on a different context after the truth is known...In Terry Pratchett's 2012 novel Dodger, Seven Dials is the setting for much of the action and where the eponymous hero lives. [32] Enjoyable read. The plot widens out into quite the conspiracy and complex dastardly deeds. What seems cliche in 2020 (group of nefarious criminals using disguise and complex sneakiness to commit international crimes) was new and daring at the time this book was written. It wasn't cliche when Christie came up with these plots....everyone imitating her made it old hat. So, I put any sense of reality out of my head and just enjoyed reading this story! Funetik Aksent: Christie enjoyed making fun of Americans and American accents. Babe St. Maur the actress is described as speaking in "pure transatlantic nasal" and speaks of her parents having come from Eastern "Yurrop". MacGuffin: George Lomax is hosting a party at his estate because he and the British government are seeking to acquire a secret formula that allows the production of very light but very strong steel.
