About this deal

In a desperate need for an editor, or perhaps a team of them, armed with red pens and a strong pot of coffee, "Year of the Locust" is a testament to the fact that sometimes less is indeed more. More editing, less... well, everything else. The book is a wild ride, but not in the way one hopes. It's like being on a bike with square wheels – sure, it's a unique experience, but you can't help but think a regular bike would have been a better choice. Compare this with the thrillers written by Mr or Mrs Clinton, and you come away feeling that Hayes is the one who has more inside knowledge' Telegraph Hayes seems to have thrown every implausible plot device into a blender, hoping for a smoothie but ending up with chunky, narrative soup. The first two-thirds of the book teeter on the edge of believability, like a cat on a windowsill in a hurricane. But it's the final third where Hayes really cranks up the 'implausibility-o-meter' to a level that would make even sci-fi aficionados raise an eyebrow. Getting such people-powered systems working, as well as reducing the spread of panic and fake news, relies on education and greater awareness, from farmers and communities to the highest levels of government. “We need people to know what locusts are, what they can and can’t do, how long they live and when they are most dangerous,” says Cressman.

In northern Kenya, Cressman says, one swarm was reported to be 25 miles long by 37 miles wide — it would blanket the city of Paris 24 times over.Experts say the upsurge is likely to be tied to extreme weather events: According to Cressman, powerful cyclones in 2018 dumped water in Oman, Yemen and the Horn of Africa. Studies found that the economic effect was largely felt by subsistence farmers. Hundreds of millions of the insects have arrived in Kenya, where they're destroying farmland. The simple answer, though, explains With arresting eyes and a firm line to his jaw, he was probably more imposing than handsome, but one thing was certain: he was the best-dressed man I had ever met. No matter the hour, no matter how fraught the situation, you would find him early in the morning in his office, or late at night in the operations centre, wearing a hand-made Brioni suit, a silk tie and a Charvet shirt. Even his collection of cufflinks was a wonder to behold. It has been a long decade for those of us awaiting a follow-up to Terry Hayes’s debut thriller I Am Pilgrim (2013). No other recent thriller has matched its level of excitement: to achieve a comparable adrenaline rush, you would have to abandon your sofa and go bungee-jumping. The tale of an American secret agent tasked with preventing a Saudi terrorist from unleashing a deadly smallpox virus, Hayes’s novel seemed for once to justify the epithet of “epic”, which can usually be dismissed, when applied to thrillers, as a euphemism for “too long”. The book’s synopsis reads: “If, like Kane, you’re a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again – by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide – and when to shoot. A small huddle of men and women closest to the cranes – most likely relatives and friends – were on their knees, wailing and praying. They looked up as a uniformed man, a lieutenant colonel, climbed on top of one of the vans and spoke in Farsi through a loudhailer, his voice echoing across the square. He read out the name of each prisoner, the charge and then the sentence.Move over Jason Bourne. CIA operative Kane redefines the smart but vulnerable bad ass super spy in this dazzling cat-and-mouse thriller where the entire globe is a chessboard, and everyone’s playing for keeps' Lisa Gardner Wanneer je, net als Kane, werkzaam bent als spion voor de CIA in Denied Access Area’s, dan hebben grenzen geen betekenis. Jouw taak is om je toegang te verschaffen, te doen wat nodig is en weer te ontsnappen… op welke manier dan ook. Je weet wanneer je moet rennen, wanneer je je moet verstoppen en wanneer je moet schieten. As you would expect, the CIA – the deeply flawed but occasionally brilliant organization where I had worked for the previous twelve years – made numerous attempts to find him, but none of them came close to success and, with more evidence of his double-dealing surfacing daily, his status grew until he became something of a dark legend to US intelligence. Worse still, the agency’s analysts drilled down and found that over the years he had assumed so many fake identities that the Company was finally forced to admit one final chilling fact: they had no idea who he really was. Maybe he wasn’t even German. For the American politician, see Terry Hayes (politician). For the American wheelchair fencer, see Terry Hayes (fencer).

They bulldoze pasturelands in dark clouds the size of football fields and small cities. Once they enter the gregarious phase, a generation of locusts can multiply twentyfold every three months. "We're talking about a corner of Africa that's really, really vulnerable," Cressman says. "The drama and spectacle of the outbreak right now is important to cover, but the more nuanced narrative involves the slow, ratchet method of building infrastructure: If you wait until it's reactive and forget about it until it happens again, we're going to be in this situation forever. I think the last release date was scheduled sometime in 2018. Many species, such as some types of coral, exhibit it. It is Brood IX, a 17 year Cicada.. If people continued on, they would realize that Kane doesn't spend too long in this timeline and the rest of the book occurs in the present so if anyone threw the book down, take it from me personally that you will finish the book on a high note. Was it worth the long wait – absolutely, but hopefully it won’t be another decade until the next one though! Please be aware that the delivery time frame may vary according to the area of delivery - the approximate delivery time is usually between 1-2 business days. Whereas A Little Life closely follows a group of four friends in New York City over the course of several decades, plunging in and out of the protagonist’s traumatic past, Yanagihara’s next novel, To Paradise, which will be published on 11 January, spans three centuries and three ‘different versions of the American experiment’. Despite this more expansive setting, it sounds likely to contain Yanagihara’s trademark anguish, with mentions of fragile characters, the AIDS epidemic and totalitarian rule. Once he had left front-line operations, he spent several decades climbing the greasy pole in Washington, and the clothes and the image were all part of that. In the corridors of power and the elite social salons of Georgetown he was seen as both accomplished and very sophisticated; a safe pair of elegant hands.

Three quarters of the book is spy thriller and then he switches in a 180 degree turn and it becomes Science Fiction - a very ballsy move, folks and dangerous. When I finished the book, I read about readers' reaction to this and yep, a few people DNF'd it, put it down and didn't continue. Ik vond Kane een boeiend personage. Je leest ook over zijn liefdesleven, maar vooral zijn taak als spion was interessant. I wasn’t surprised that the crowd had reacted with silence. It has been my misfortune to witness a number of executions – several by firing squad, two by hanging and one when an elderly man had been strapped into an electric chair and forced to ‘ride the lightning’, as the guards on death row call it – and I can promise you: the terror on the face of a man or woman as everything they had hoped to be vanishes into eternity never leaves you. The memory of it will surface at 3 a.m. when everything you fear most in the world is on its way, coming up the stairs to find you. The spiritual meaning of locusts is often interpreted as a symbol of transformation, regeneration....... Readers of the likes of Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum – and of course if you’ve not already read I Am Pilgrim you should do so at once!

This portion of the book sees Kane getting displaced forward in time after a disastrous voyage in a prototype submarine that has cloaking technology and he finds himself 24 years in the future where New York is an apocalyptic landscape and The Locust has been hell bent on destroying the world - pretty out there, huh? The Guards, in unison, pushed the prisoners forward. Ten pairs of feet left the wooden platforms and an involuntary gasp went up from the crowd. The relatives and friends watched shoes and sandals rain down as the victims fell through the air. In East Africa, however, locust invasions are rarer. This year has been the worst for 25 years and, in Kenya, for 70 years.

Scott-Kerr said: “There is little in publishing terms that will give me more pleasure than releasing Terry’s new book. He is one of the great storytellers of contemporary thriller fiction and certainly not the sort of writer to rest on his laurels, even after writing such a classic as I Am Pilgrim.” At this point, you half expect a unicorn to trot in, offering everyone a ride to Narnia. The plot twists are less 'twists' and more akin to narrative gymnastics. The characters, once somewhat grounded, now leap across time and battle zombies with a casualness that makes you wonder if they're all just in a particularly vivid fever dream.

Within the book I liked how (unrelated to the main plot) there was a side mission of sorts involving The Magus, an elusive traitor that Kane tries to locate and by the end of the book there is a tantalizing detail that ties up that sub plot. On this front, though, this year’s weather presented yet another challenge: “The same rainfall that led to the locusts breeding and getting out of control has created a problem for remote sensing because the vegetation has been so much greener than average.” This makes it difficult to compare variation in greenery with previous years.
