About this deal

Making this paella as part of a dinner? Here’s are some first course and side dish ideas for what to serve with paella: Calasparra is a type of short-grained rice that tastes very similar to bomba rice. So, you will barely detect a difference in taste or texture if you substitute Calasparra rice in your paella dish.

Bestsubstitute for paella rice is risotto rice ( arborio rice) which has similar characteristics ie. ability to absorb lots of liquid, except risotto goes creamy if you stir it. The next best is medium grain rice – the same rice I use for rice pudding. Cook. Bring the liquid in the pan to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 15-18 minutes uncovered, shaking the pan once or twice during the cooking process. Chorizo paella - Another common ingredient in many paella recipes is a spicy Spanish sausage known as chorizo. It's different from Mexican chorizo, so if you have a hard time finding it, andouille sausage is a decent substitute and much easier to find in most grocery stores. This is my best paella recipe that is as close to authentic paella as I have been able to make seeing as how I'm not from Spain or own a special pan. But the flavors, textures, and method are pretty much just what I remember from my visits to the country. I hope you try it and love this dish as much as we do! What is Paella? Although you have some options for substituting your paella rice, there are still certain kinds of rice that you should steer away from.

The truth is you have not tried a paella until you have had an authentic paella, whether in Valencia or in a fancy Spanish restaurant here in the states. Stir in paella rice. Add the paella rice to the pan with the veggies and meat. Stir everything together so the individual rice grains are coated in the seasonings and oil from the pan. Forgot to include calamari in the above photo! if you don’t find rings, buy a squid tube then slice it – as pictured below. Leftover paella is absolutely delicious and we always fight over who gets it for lunch the next day. It will keep for 2-3 days in an airtight container in the fridge or you can freeze leftovers for up to 2 months. Paella is a Spanish dish that originated in the Valencia region of Spain. It is a rice-based dish that is typically made with the main ingredients of a short-grain rice, saffron threads for color and aroma, a variety of vegetables, and some type of meat or seafood.

Cultivated in Eastern Spain, this short-grained rice is practically made for paella, and solely used for making this dish. Regardless, using short-grain rice as a substitute will not greatly affect how the texture of your paella turns out. Moreover, like bomba rice, short-grain rice easily soaks up water. 3. Calrose riceBecause of this, it gets its name from the Spanish word “bombeo” which means “to pump”: when cooked, the grains absorb more water than other types of rice, allowing them to expand and become fluffy yet still maintain their shape.
