The Smooth flight saw Desi Daru Mango Vodka take home another Master, enjoyed for its “lovely juicy mango on the nose” and “warming and smooth texture without excessive heat”. For consumers looking to explore what the vodka category has to offer, there can be a lot to take in. Therefore, The Global Spirits Masters Competitions hosted The Vodka Masters 2022 in August to determine the brands with the best liquid inside the bottle. Panel three comprised: chair Bernadette Pamplin, freelance drinks writer and founder of the Under the Ginfluence blog; Sara Jane Eichler, founder of the Negroni Club UK; and Alan Uresti, head of agave spirits and drinks development at Annabel’s. Elyx is made with grain taken exclusively from the Råbelöf estate in Sweden and is manually distilled in a 1921 copper rectification.

A Gold was given to Grainger’s Deluxe Organic Vodka, and a Silver was awarded to Koskenkorva Vodka Organic. Bottled at 41% ABV, the spirit is made with a mix of British and Indian ingredients – English winter wheat and Ratnagiri Maharashtra mangos. Judge Rodriguez-Curtis gave it full marks for being “smooth, very well done, rounded, creamy and enjoyable’’, and went on to say it would go well in “a killer Martini”.Mohit Singh commented on the launch:"As British-born Indians, my co-founder Aneet and I wanted to create a vodka that celebrated the best of both worlds. We wanted to create something truly special that would showcase the highest quality ingredients from India's Ratnagiri to the lush English countryside. The journey has been a labour of love, and we are thrilled to finally share Desi Daru with the world. The Rest of the World round awarded two Golds and two Silver medals. Gold winner Meili Vodka was described as “comforting and rich”, with “lemon rind, cacao nibs and a hint of dried vanilla” on the nose. Fellow Gold medallist The Community Spirit Vodka offered a “crisp and clean nose” and a “long and lingering finish”. Slight earthiness on the nose, a bit of citrus, and some tropical fruit aromas emerge as the vodka opens up, along with a fresh, ripe apple note. Creamy and oily on the palate. Very flavorful with notes of tropical fruits, especially banana, some pepperiness, and a custard-like quality. The finish is long and creamy, with a touch of pepperiness and lingering tropical fruit notes.

Absolut Elyx also took home a Master, impressing Rodriguez-Curtis with its “clean nose, lemon and ripe stone fruit. The palate has a pleasant mouthfeel, good texture and well balanced alcohol”. As evidenced by our Taste Master winner, perhaps a renewed focus on flavours from vodka producers will help to drive growth of the category. The William Grant & Sons-owned brand is one of many distillers now embracing eco-friendly practices.The distillery has been operating since 2020 and crafts its vodka from locally grown and malted barley. Barley malt produces an exceptionally rich, creamy vodka with a noticeable sweetness.
