About this deal

Fit is important – your shoe needs to rest on the body of the pedal rather than the cleat mechanism, for stability and trouble-free clip-out. Personally, I don’t require all that much float, almost none really. I prefer to be snug in the pedal for more efficient power transfer and control. How about cost? Are Eggbeater pedals more expensive than other brands? Eggbeater 11 – Rider weight limit 200 lbs/90 kg. This is the featherweight titanium model at 179 grams per pair. When these pedals first came out there was some concern about durability. I’m pretty sure Crank Brothers has resolved any major issues. My Eggbeaters have performed superbly.

Even though the consensus seems to be that the older, round retention bar design is superior to the current square bar design, I prefer the newer design. One of the coolest things I see at the races are pit bikes. These are bikes with regular flat pedals that mechanics use just to get around. Since bike mechanics are on their feet a lot, they don’t want to be standing on cleats. Does Crank Brothers have a good reputation as a component brand? I do like the Candy platform because it provides me with some stability, but it can cause mud to accumulate around the pedal. This is not a problem you will have with Eggbeaters. Both Eggbeater and Candy pedals are multi-sided so that you can clip in quite easily. PROSOutside of design differences, we can see that some Eggbeater models are priced among the lowest in our table, and are also among the lightest. And while spring tension isn’t adjustable, their simple, durable design has been around for many years and is popular among cyclists of all stripes. Looking for More Support? Crank Brothers has been around since 1977. They started out in a Laguna Beach garage. Just surviving as a MTB gear maker is a huge accomplishment, let alone being a big name since the ‘70s. These guys are true industry pioneers.

If you're serious about bicycling as a sport, sooner or later you're going to get yourself a pair of clip-in pedals. These pedals are so small that they give you more power and less resistance for your pedaling efforts. More importantly, doesn't the pressure right in only one spot on the soles of the feet put stress on the arch of your foot? Unless the soles of the specialty cleats with the little slots in the bottoms are really stiff, I know I would have trouble with that. There are a couple of reasons riders like these adjustments. Some might have knee problems which require more float to take the stress off the knees. Others like to be able to move around a bit when clipped in. It is safe to say that just about all the pros use XTRs. Sven Nys continues to use Shimano’s XTR line even though, as one of the sport’s best riders, he has access to prototype equipment with custom adjustments. Also though Shimano haven’t yet introduced a cyclocross version of their renowned SPD pedal system, many pros opt for the XTR race pedal due to its reliability in muddy conditions and its excellent value for money. Eggbeaters are about as simple as a pedal gets — just a spindle with a spring retention mechanism. No platform, no plates, just four sprung bars, effectively making it into a four-sided pedal.

When I finally decided to admit to myself that bicycling has become a serious part of my life, I asked around and learned about clip-in pedals and how they hook into the bottoms of special pairs of shoes. The other negative is that there’s less underfoot support if you like to shift around on your pedals while standing. This wasn’t an issue for me, but Crankbrothers says that even half the xc racers who use its pedals would choose the small-platformed Candy pedals over the Eggbeater for that reason. You might also appreciate a little extra platform if you use softer shoes. See the PM for more info, but of the choices, I'd prefer the 2-hole Quattro cleat. It's a bit more adjustable than the 3-hole in terms of angle and left-right as compared to the 3-hole, and the 'road' cleat allows the wings of the pedal to groove the shoe surface. The plastic of the Quattro prevents that. One can be relatively well-assured that Crank Brothers pedals are going to work well, given that the majority of American pro CX racers and thousands of amateur racers use them.

The Eggbeater 3 is an extreme durable MTB pedal fitted with the same needle bearings as crankbrothers flagship. The body and spring are completely made out of high quality and durable stainless steel, to ensure the perfect stability and a long lifespan. The unique pedal design makes it possible to clip in on 4 sides. The waterproof seals are improved and the eggbeaters design makes it almost impossible for mud and dirt to stay attached to your pedal. Facilitate regular dismounting / remounting of the bike (This means a single-sided road cycling, a clipless pedal is not a good idea.). Depending on what way round the cleats are fitted to your shoes, you can choose between 15° and 20° release angles. If you’re a beginner, sport or expert mountain bike rider, Eggbeater pedals are an attractive option. They’re light and work great. I dig their sleek profile. Their shape makes them look like cake mixer blades, hence the name. For me, their mud-shedding capacity was the most excellent feature. If you plan to do any riding in swamps, forests or places with clay soil, it would be advisable to use any of the Crank Brothers models. Yes. You can use standard Shimano SPD cleats with Egg Beater pedals. Still, when your current cleats wear out, it might be a good idea to get Crank Brothers cleats. The difference in performance might be small, but anything that improves performance is worth it if you ask me. What are the most important things to consider when choosing cyclocross pedals? Best Type of pedals for Cyclocross

However, if you ride mostly aggressive conditions and prefer more stability, I’ve found Crankbrothers’ Candy pedals worked wonderfully with minimal weight penalty for the added footbed support. They’re also priced in the same range as Eggbeater models and made from the same materials. Is 1 or 2-Sided Entry OK? What I like is that I can still use them with flat shoes when I am just getting around town. One should be able to find replacements for the Eggbeater cleats in most local bike shops PROS The minimalist profile also offers other advantages, such as improved mud clearance. If you’re into winter riding, these pedals may be less likely to get gunked up with snow and ice as well. Will SPD cleats work on Crank Bros Egg Beaters?Lastly, is price. Ultra-lightweight components are made of exotic (= expensive) materials like titanium and carbon fiber. The top of the line Eggbeaters are made of ti and stainless steel. They only weigh 179 grams per pair. That’s insanely light. Do just a few grams of weight really make a difference? Downhill pedals are a whole different species. They are sturdy and heavy since they take a lot of abuse. Downhilling is really a different sport altogether. If you’re into cross country or rail trail riding, you’re not wearing a full face downhill helmet and crash armor either. In this regard, I would like to warn you against the use of flat MTB pedals with more aggressive spikes. These work perfectly well for MTBs, where it seems the rule is to never dismount for any barrier, regardless of how long it takes to inch across it, but in the world of CX, dismounting and running isn’t seen as a sign of failure and it won’t be long before you do some serious damage to your calves and/or shins.
