About this deal

Filling the Baskets: Fill the Gabion baskets with the selected Gabion stone, layer by layer. Compact each layer of stone to ensure stability and cut settlement. The rebar will sit evenly spaced against the plumb line, as it will later be attaching to your gabion boxes. Dig post hole diameter 3 times the width of the post (i.e., the hole for a 4″ wood post should be about 12 inches wide). The depth of the hole should be 1/3-1/2 the post height above ground (i.e., a 6-foot tall fence would require a hole depth of at least 2 feet). Gabion pillars are mostly decorative when used in landscaping and create a dramatic vertical focal point. We cut 14-16″ cross wire, long enough to wrap around the rebar a few times before connecting it to either side of the basket.

Set of 3 Tall Gabion Galvanized Wire Cages 9.8″ x 9.8″ x 39.4″ This set of 3 taller cages are good for making tall fountains and pillars. They are sturdy metal baskets, which are filled with stones to create a landscaping feature for your garden. These structures can also be removed and reused in different locations. This adaptability allows for relocating and repurposing the Gabion components, minimising waste. Connections and Reinforcement: Install bracing or tie wires between adjacent Gabion baskets to prevent bulging. This is especially important for taller or curved Gabion walls. The subsequent layer of 10 - 15 centimetres of manure or coarse compost provides sufficient fertilisation.

The size of stone used for Gabions can vary depending on the application and design requirements. Generally, a range of stone sizes is best to fill Gabions, allowing for a more stable structure. You want to loop each end of your wire in a fashion so that you loop around the baskets horizontal and vertical basket wire. Mailboxes made from gabion cages are a unique choice (assuming your neighborhood association would approve it, I doubt mine would). Now simply assemble the outer basket and connect it to the appropriate spacers on the inner basket. Here, too, the spacers ensure that the high bed of gabions remains in better shape. Gabions raised bed filling - Filling gabion baskets with stones

The modular nature of Gabion cages allows for easy shape, size, and configuration customisation. You can design Gabions in different heights and lengths to suit the project's specific needs. It was challenging trying to figure out how to do this project. There was very little online information detailing how to build a small 2ft high gabion cage garden wall. So I will do my best to detail my findings, rational, and building processes. Now all your high raised bed of gabions needs is the inner filling. As with any other raised bed, this consists of five different layers, the filling material of which becomes increasingly finer at the top. While brushwood and coarse branches are filled into the bottom of the loft bed, compost and finely sifted soil form the top layer. If you have a compost heap in your garden and want to use the compost obtained with it for the gabion raised bed, neither meat nor fish waste should land on it. The best times to replant a gabion raised bed are spring and autumn: this is where most of the garden waste accumulates, which you can use immediately for the construction of the raised bed. By the way, it is quite normal for the contents of the raised bed to collapse within a year and then have to be replenished with fresh garden soil. Every raised bed has to be rebuilt after about five years anyway, as the nutrient content of the soil is simply exhausted by then. The individual layers from bottom to top: The image I have here shows two different foundational support options for a large scale retaining build. Gabions are wire mesh containers filled with stones used for various purposes, such as retaining walls or decorative features. When choosing stones to fill Gabions, it's important to consider their durability, stability, aesthetics, and availability. Measure the diameter of your pot and use bolt cutters or an angle grinder to cut a hole on the lid. Gabion support posts (rebar) must extend to at least 1.5 x Depth from the top of the gabion basket. Gabion support posts need to be strong enough that they do not snap or bend under the load of the gabion wall. Gabion cages are tied to the support posts with brace wire/stiffening rods (Gabion wall stability guidelines, n.d.)
