This only works while the plant is dormant, and can be fatal to the plant at other times of year. Propagation by seed is difficult, as seeds only germinate after a fire. The genus name Papaver is classical Latin for the poppy plant. It appears to have no Indo–European cognates and cannot be explained further. The Latin word lives today in several languages, in French pivot and Portuguese papoila. It is also the source of English word poppy (Old English popæg).

Draw a furrow and label the row. Mix the seed with fine sand and sow very, very thinly along the row between thumb and forefinger. Cover with a maximum of 50mm (¼in) of soil, press carefully down with your hands and sprinkle finely with water. Sow extra rows at no less than 20cm (8in) apart.

When to plant poppies

Flowering from late spring through early summer, the stems will be tipped with 5-8 gigantic flowers each. The white petals are often rippled or crinkled like crepe paper. As the flowers fade, the center forms an inedible fruit as its seed pod. It can self-sow in fall once the seeds have ripened. You can choose from approximately 120 different varieties of poppy including annual, biennial and perennial flowers. They come in a wide choice of colours - sow a mixture of poppy seeds for a naturalised wildflower garden look, or make a dramatic statement by sowing a single colour en masse.

Once they get established the plants are very hardy. Australia (Tasmania), Turkey and India are the major producers of poppy for medicinal purposes and poppy-based drugs, such as morphine or codeine.
