About this deal

Once your horse is relaxed walking large around the arena, you can start asking for halt transitions and changes of direction. But so is a normal halter, when it’s used with too much, too long, too often, sudden, steady pressure!

A bungee is an elasticated cord that runs over the top of your horse’s head, through the bit and clips to the girth between his front legs. always be careful when fitting equipment that exerts poll pressure. Begin on a very loose setting to allow your horse to become accustomed to the feeling of it, then adjust it to the appropriate length for correct workHow it works – Similar to a chambon, it works on your horse’s poll and mouth to encourage him to lengthen his topline.

Salomon de la Broue was a pupil of Giovanni Pignatelli from the Napolitan school; together with Pluvinel, de la Broue was the founder of the French school. The Cavesson can be used to halt, bend, lift and lead a horse, and has basically the same functions as a bridle. Some horses work best with a cavesson, others with a bridle. For horses who have difficulties with a bit a cavesson is often a good way to get the horse in favour of riding and the rider’s hand again. Use of them for in-hand training of classical movements helps to supple and build up musculature without the effects of the riders weight and/or balance.

Transitions – practise walk-to-halt and halt-to-walk transitions. Always remember to ask for a downward transition or a reduction in pace with a gentle squeeze and release of the rein and not one constant pull. You want the horse to respond to a lighter aid. Instead of improving our skills, we might look for the easier ‘solution’ and start using a cavesson without an iron chain. As you move farther away on the circle, the cavesson allows you to still be able to play with balance. You horse now has a free-flowing line from their poll all the way through to their hind legs, giving you a more precise ability for communication. The cavesson also allows you to see the position of your horse’s natural head carriage. It doesn’t create head height, but shows where your horse’s natural head height is.

I can’t answer this question because I don’t know you or your horse. Lunging with a cavesson is still the best option for someone who is new to classical lunging and for horses who tend to pull on the lunge line. If you are uncomfortable lunging off the bit but still want to use side reins, you can invest in a special lunging cavesson and slip bridle setup that combines the two methods. Just be aware that you will pay a pretty penny for that setup, but it may be worth it for some people. Goals of lunging: Gymnastics and exercise. The horse should lean against the auxiliary reins and find a support there. The gymnastic value can be strengthened by pole- and cavaletti work. Sometimes, changing the rein can cause them to react because you disappear into their blind spot briefly,” Brendan says. “When I change the rein from left to right, I take up the outside line and place myself so that I’m walking behind the horse on the circle. I stay slightly to the inside so the horse can still see me. Keeping at a safe distance, I ask the horse to come across the middle of the circle and move across my path. I would then move from the left to the right-hand side of the horse and allow a bit of line on what was the inside rein as I encourage the horse to turn right.” Epic rugs are now available in our original heavy horse Broad Fit, for heavy weight horses & ponies, and a Regular Fit, for light-medium weight horses & ponies.

What to look out for

As you move farther away on the circle, the cavesson allows you to still be able to play with balance. Your horse now has a free-flowing line from their poll all the way through to their hind legs, giving you a more precise ability for communication. The cavesson also allows you to see the position of your horse’s natural head carriage. It doesn’t create head height but shows where your horse’s natural head height is.

When we put horses on a circle on the halter, we tend to see too much of a bend to the inside. When we look for a bending horse, what do we usually look for? We can feel the bend, we can see their eye, and we can see their jaw turn. These have a thinner chain and smaller rings than the french baroque style, making them lighter weight and ideal for a finer head, although the thinner noseband will act more directly on the nose area. For lunging, the lunge leader needs a sufficiently lunge line & double lunge. It should lie well in the hand and offer sufficient support. At one end of the lunge line there is a simple hand loop, which prevents the lunge line from being pulled completely out of the hand. The other end of the lunge line has a carabiner or a clip with which the lunge line can be securely fastened to the bit ring or the cavesson. The lunging whipserves as a thigh substitute and thus as a driving aid. The ideal lunging whip is exactly long enough so that the horse can still be touched lightly with the lash of the whip. It is also light and has a good grip. For safety reasons, gloves are an absolute must when lunging properly, and it is also important to wear suitable footwearto ensure a secure footing.

The cavesson consists of a metal noseband, consisting of an iron chain, wrapped around with leather, which shapes around the nose.
